Want a Cosmic Superpower? You Got It: Meet Your Ruling Planet

Space suits not required.

Every sun sign has a ruling planet (or two) which has a direct influence on the personality and strengths of those born under that sign—pause for *the more you know* rainbow. Okay, so want to know what they are? Of course you do! Reap your blessings from the Universe, people, and tune in to your planetary super-powers! Read on for yours.

1. ARIES

Mars is your ruling planet and its energy is all about passion, conflict, competition and danger. You are basically a superhero, ready to embark upon Mission Impossibles that others would run TF away from! Your life is an adventure. Mars has you bristling with red-hot ambition and passion, burning through the day and lighting up wherever you are. No one ignores you, that’s for sure, and if they do: B-I-G mistake. Huge! You demand and command attention and recognition.

Fire, accidents, and danger are also ruled by Mars, so, uh, please watch out for yourself.

Pause for some fun facts:

  • Mars is roughly half the size of Earth.
  • A day on Mars lasts 24 hours and 37.5 minutes, but a year is nearly twice the length of one on Earth at 687 days.
  • Once every 15 years Mars comes nearer to the Earth than any other planet (except for Venus), and at that time it glows red.

Back to what that all means: You’ve got enormous energy, a robust constitution and resilience, a pioneering spirit and thirst for adventure. Use your strength to protect the vulnerable and promote truth, justice, and good karma on Earth.

2. SCORPIO

You’re one of the special ones, Scorp, because you’ve got *two* ruling planets. Firstly, Mars (see above). This planet gives you an enormous life-force, passion and intensity. You’re not scared of anyone, and competition excites you. It puts you on a collision course with your Mars twin, Aries. When you’re aligned, you’re unstoppable together. But, when you’re not…well, bye!

Your other planet is Pluto (the ancient god of the spooOoky), which rules regenerative forces, the beginnings, and endings of life. As such, you’re innately drawn to the mysterious, the occult and the spiritual. You are not scared to probe humanity’s ~underbelly~ and secrets. Scorpio, you’re more complex than most: you’ve got layers and levels and secrets and depths. TL;Dr: your psyche is a labyrinth.

Pause for some fun facts:

  • Pluto wasn’t discovered until 1930.
  • Pluto is the ninth, and outermost, planet of our solar system, 3,680,000,000 miles from the Sun.
  • Pluto takes nearly 250 years to make one orbit around the Sun, and therefore dwells for many years (from 13 – 32) in each star sign.

Back to what that all means: You have the energy, ambition, and human understanding to control and navigate your pathway to the very top of any ambition you choose, albeit tempered with a dangerous temptation to self-destruct. You’re turbulent and powerful, and at your best when your strength is focussed on a positive aim. No one can stop you in full flow.

3. TAURUS AND LIBRA

Both of you are ruled by the Earth’s sister-planet, Venus. Venus influences beauty and the arts, pleasure, emotions, romance and love. It promotes a desire for luxury (ask your credit card), for love (ask your Tinder DMs) and exceptional creative ability (ask everyone: you’ve got a great eye for pretty much everything).

Venus helps make you both lucky in love, so you’re rarely short of admirers, they just sort of come to you. Hey, it’s all in the stars!

Pause for some fun facts:

  • Venus is our nearest planet, a little over 67 million miles away.
  • Venus’s surface is shrouded by clouds made of carbon dioxide and sulphuric acid, it has a rocky surface covered with craters, mountains and volcanoes.
  • Venus completes a revolution around the Sun every 225 days.

Back to what that all means: Finding the fun and pleasure in life comes naturally, and this means you’re known as great company and someone that others are magnetically drawn to. You’ll never be lonely or lacking for relationships. Your look is always on point. You know how to make life look beautiful. This isn’t some frivolous or fanciful trait; you innately understand how to inspire people to be their best self.

4. GEMINI AND VIRGO

Although free-wheeling, trash-talking Gemini and perfectionist, buttoned-up Virgo might not look like compatible cosmic-twins on paper, you do share a ruling planet in Mercury. What you both possess, as a result, is a thirst for travel and exploration, a love of gossip and news, an ability to speak eloquently and write beautifully and a swift-moving, nervous temperament. Geminis and Virgos are always sniffing the air for danger, on high-alert and vigilant for new news and change. You’re always one step ahead and that is often where you bump into each other. (Like, in a good way.)

Pause for some fun facts:

  • Mercury is the second smallest planet in our solar system (only Pluto is smaller).
  • Mercury appears as an evening star in March and April, and a morning star in September and October.
  • Mercury moves very quickly, completing a revolution around the Sun every 88 days.

Back to what that all means: You know how to communicate in all forms: from writing to public speaking, from debate to story-telling, from bargaining to singing and acting. All of it! If words are required, you can find just the right ones. You’re a magical communicator, so don’t waste this talent.

5. CANCER

You’re ruled by the Moon, the Earth’s one satellite which exerts a powerful influence over our seasons, landscapes, natural cycles, and even (some believe) emotions. And, like the continual waxing and waning of the Moon itself, you’re a moody person, you can switch from light to dark just like that. You also have an innate connection with the unseen, the unconscious and the inner world. So, nothing gets past you. There is no secret or lie you can’t sniff out, you probably can’t even explain how you do it.

Pause for some fun facts:

  • The Moon rotates at 10 miles per hour compared to the Earth's rotation of 1,000 miles per hour. Math is fun, you guys!
  • The Moon is in synchronous rotation with Earth meaning the same side is always facing the Earth.
  • We can see the Moon because light from the Sun bounces off it back to the Earth.

Back to what that all means: Psychic abilities. Whether it’s actually clairvoyance or just a hyper-strong blend of creativity and emotional intelligence, the Moon’s influence amounts to somehow being able to see beyond the “shown.” You know what others really feel, you understand their motivations, you can see where it’s all heading. You’re the zodiac’s great mystic.

6. LEO

Lucky Leo, ruled by the Sun, and therefore luxuriating in its warmth and light and feeling naturally at home in the center of the solar system. You absorb that whole center-of-things attitude into your own personality, too: you expect to command the attention of others and, over time, learn how to do just that effortlessly. Your warmth and energy are next level, and others draw closer to bask in your company.

Pause for some fun facts:

  • At its center, the Sun reaches temperatures of 15 million degrees celsius. Casual.
  • The Sun is all the colors mixed together, but appears white to our eyes.
  • The Sun accounts for 99.86 percent of the mass in the solar system. Over one million Earths could fit inside the Sun.

Back to what that all means: The Sun bestows you with natural vitality and boundless energy, as well as a hard-wired authority. So, you’re both loved, and maybe a lil bit feared. Leos are born, with the Sun shining on them, to lead others, so you’re already in the spotlight. This is your cosmic destiny: to lead.

7. SAGITTARIUS

You’re the luckiest of all the star signs, because you’re ruled by Jupiter, which provides abundance, opportunity and good fortune on those it influences. You typically land on your feet and make it through in one piece, no matter how messy things get. Your mantra is basically: go hard or go home. You gamble and take chances; you go all! in!; you live in the now. You’re a magnetic character and Jupiter swirls around you, creating that charisma.

Pause for some fun facts:

  • Jupiter is the largest planet, more than 300 times bigger than Earth.
  • Jupiter takes 12 years to complete an orbit around the Sun, however a day on Jupiter only lasts 9 hours and 50 minutes.
  • Jupiter has 16 Moons, and its surface is extremely hot: 3,400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Back to what that all means: Popularity. You have a natural optimism, which keeps away the black clouds and foggy days. Making friends easily and being so well-liked creates good vibes and good luck around you. Your joy is infectious.

8. PISCES

You’ve got two ruling planets, both of which are very different and create an interesting dynamic. Firstly, Jupiter (see above) which bestows a likeability, positivity, and natural lucky vibes around you. However, Neptune, the mystical and magical planet, also rules your sign so you’re drawn to, and excel at, anything requiring intuition and instinct. Always trust your gut, Pisces, it somehow knows the right way to go. You’re a lil bit psychic, and those abilities are precious.

Jupiter brings you ambition and opportunity, but Neptune casts a shade over you sometimes, and you can talk yourself out of action by focussing on doubt, illusion, and escape. Like your sign’s symbol (the two fish tied together, pulling in opposite directions) you are often at the mercy of your conflicting desires and dual nature.

Pause for some fun facts:

  • Neptune is 30 times further away from the Sun than Earth, and is the eighth planet in our solar system.
  • The planet cannot be seen with the naked eye, and is difficult to pick out even with a telescope.
  • Neptune (like Saturn, Uranus, and Jupiter) has rings, 5 of ‘em, and eight Moons.

Back to what that all means: You have a powerful depth of understanding and empathy with others, which is also tempered with great charisma and warmth. You are able to access higher realms of consciousness, enabling you to make the most wonderful expressions of art and insight. Pisces, the Universe wants you to CREATE!

9. CAPRICORN

Saturn doesn’t mess about and neither do you, Cap. This ruling planet represents obstacles, limitations, discipline, responsibility, duty, and authenticity. Saturn makes you get real, and you suffer no illusions (nor fools) about what life is all about (aka, working hard, amirite?!). We all experience a Saturn Return every 27-30 years (the length of time it takes Saturn to return to the position it was in when we were born), which is like a massive wake-up call and a challenge to grow up, wise up, shape up. But, you, Capricorn, have that planetary voice in your ear all day every day. You were born grown up!

Pause for some fun facts:

  • Saturn moves very slowly around the Sun, taking 29.5 years to make an orbit, but it spins quickly on its own axis and a day on Saturn only lasts 10 hours and 14 minutes.
  • Saturn shines with a steady, yellowish light.
  • Until the end of the 18th Century, Saturn was believed to be the most remote planet in our solar system (887 million miles from the Sun).

Back to what that all means: Courage to face the truth and address reality. You take a tenacious and steadfast approach to every obstacle, which means you can pretty much handle anything. You’re endowed with super-human coping skills, making you an inspiration and example to others.

10. AQUARIUS

You are ruled by Uranus, whose influence is all about disruption, the unconventional and unexpected, innovation, and change. Some people might say you’re a little bit eccentric, or at least a true individual, and that is Uranus working its magic on you. Proudly independent, resolutely assertive. You know yourself, and you know you’re different.

Uranus governs invention, aerodynamics and modern science, so you’re a natural engineer, scientist, inventor type. You’ve got a sharp mind and a thirst for improvement and progress. You don’t believe in the status quo—you seek change and advancement.

Pause for some fun facts:

  • Uranus’s orbit around the Sun is almost a perfect circle and takes 84 years and 7 days to complete.
  • There are 68,000 days in one Uranian year, as it spins quickly on its own axis.
  • Uranus rotates, on its axis, in a different direction to other planets, meaning that the Sun rises in the west and sets in the east.

Back to what that all means: You can stand alone against the rest of the world and teach us all something new, something different, something challenging. Your powers of innovation and independent thinking enable you to see solutions to global problems the rest of us can’t.
