The decision to get yourself inked is not an easy one, especially if you are getting a tattoo for the first time. From the horror dreams of how painful the process might be to the drawing you want to get permanently etched, the questions are endless. Which is why we caught up with India’s first award-winning veteran tattoo artist and founder of Devil'z Tattoos, Lokesh Verma, to answer all our queries.

Cosmo: What are the most common myths and questions people have before getting a tattoo and how do you dispel them?
Lokesh: The most common question that we are asked is, if tattoos are too painful and can they donate blood or not after getting the tattoo. We try to be friendly and walk them through the entire process to clear all their doubts. Most of the clients are just anxious because they are getting tattooed for the first time.
Tattoos were a taboo in the past, especially in India. It was looked upon as something rogue people get. But now, it is getting accepted as an art form. Though, face tattoos are still off-limits for the majority of people.

Cosmo: What are the most popular tattoo designs that couples opt for other than their partner's name?
Lokesh:
Usually, they go for unique designs like lock and key, puzzle pieces, sun and moon, king and queen of cards, infinity tattoo, avocado’s et cetera. It’s upon the personal preferences of the clients.

Cosmo: What are the most bizarre tattoos (if, any) that people have asked to get made?
Lokesh:
There is no best or worst or bizarre tattoo for me. I just do the best I can with the ideas from the clients. So, whatever I do next would be the best tattoo up until now. Also instead of doing a bad job with a tattoo, I am not confident about, I would rather choose not to do it.

Cosmo: What inspired you to become a tattoo artist?

Lokesh: I could always draw a little bit and wanted to do something different. While I was doing an internship in a corporate, playing the DJ, I saw someone sporting a tattoo and was fascinated by it. The year was 2003 when I saved some money to import tattoo equipment and started tattooing myself because I was so fascinated by it and wanted to try it so much. My friends liked it and then their friends and then there was no looking back.
