Are you Following These 7 Summer Skincare Rules?

With the Covid-19 lockdown gradually lifting and life as we knew it once returning to normalcy, its time to step outside and face the summer sun.

Having spent what seems like aeons inside our homes while the pandemic raged on, your skin may take a while to get used to the change in activity levels. Dermatologist and cosmetologist Dr Kiran Godse of Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi-A Fortis Network Hospital, agrees.

She says, "When summers approach, temperatures rise and so does the humidity level. Humidity brings in a lot of changes in our skin and hair behaviour. Our skin becomes sweaty, oilier, develops acne, blackheads, whiteheads, is more prone to fungal infections, heat boils and body odours. Even our hair becomes frizzier with an oily scalp and  dandruff becomes an issue."

In a nutshell, you need to upgrade your intensely moisturising, winter-perfect skincare routine to something lighter for the hotter months. Dr Godse suggests the following tips to do just that:

Cleansing is key

"Cleanse your skin well with a gentle cleanser twice a day. In case you are prone to excessive sweating or suffers from body odour, bathing twice daily will be helpful. You must also try washing your hair at least twice a week especially if you work out. For those suffering from an itchy or dandruff prone scalp, using an anti-dandruff shampoo regularly can keep dandruff at bay."

Use a dusting powder

"Make sure to dry your skin well before wearing clothes. You can also use dusting powder to help absorb excess moisture and preventing fungal infections, heat boils or prickly heat issues. Wearing closed footwear for a prolonged period can give rise to fungal infections and soft corns in the web spaces, so using dusting powder on the foot too before wearing socks or shoes."

Sunscreen is MVP

"Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen is crucial, especially for those who suffer from hyperpigmentation and sun sensitivity. Reapply the same every 2-3 hours for adequate sun protection, especially if one is constantly out in the sun. However, it is not necessary to apply sunscreen under your mask, as it may cause irritation and acne flare-ups since the occlusion inside the mask damages the skin barrier and makes it more prone to irritation. Apart from using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing helps. Light-coloured loose cotton garments should be preferred to avoid any excessive sweating and friction."

Reduce the oiling sessions

"Avoid oiling your hair frequently as it can lead to heat boils on the scalp or even acne on the forehead and back. If you must do so, apply a teaspoon of oil an hour before washing your hair wash once a week."

Watch out for steroids in skincare

"Avoid taking drugs or applying over-the-counter-creams especially ones that target fungal infections, since a majority of them contain steroids which may worsen your skin condition. When in doubt, consult your dermatologist and keep your body well hydrated."
