Are You *Really* Hungry or Are You Eating Your Emotions?

A steaming hot bowl of noodle soup or a slice of gooey chocolate cake - all of us have certain comfort foods that we turn to when we need to calm our minds and steady our nerves.

These heavy, cheesy or oily meals can provide comfort when we need a break from adulting or when we just want to treat ourselves. However, if you often find yourself turning to your favourite comfort it may take a toll on your waistline as well as your health! Culinary nutrition and holistic coach, and wellness advocate Eshanka Wahi agrees.

She says, "We are conditioned to turn to food to find comfort, avoid an uncomfortable situation or heighten a celebration. This typically means that we mostly eat based on how we feel emotionally rather than allowing the body to ask for fuel when it needs it. However, identifying physical hunger from emotional hunger is pivotal to gauge the body’s signals to know when it is actually hungry."

So, how can you tell when you are actually hungry or when you are just eating your emotions? Eshanka shares the following table to differentiate between your cravings so that you can turn to your comfort food only when you *really* need it:

PHYSICAL HUNGER

EMOTIONAL HUNGER

It comes naturally, over a period of time, and can be gradually postponed

Feels extremely sudden and urgent. Create an urge to eat instantly.

Allows you to make an informed decision based on a variety of options to choose from, to feel satisfied.

Becomes specific to a certain type of food craving and gets stuck in a loop to eat just that one thing.

While eating, it is easy to identify when full so can stop eating and not overeat.

Makes it very difficult to identify when full so continue to keep eating in the hope to escape the feeling.

Does not make you feel any guilt after eating the meal.

This is usually followed with guilt, bloating and feeling sluggish and lazy after eating the meal.

You can feel it clearly in the stomach, as it begins to growl.

This starts in the mind, and becomes hard to get that thought out of the mind.

It is usually caused after the stomach being empty for a few hours to revive energy and get nutrition.

It is usually caused due to an uncomfortable emotion.

Need to honour the hunger and eat.

Need to train the mind to find other ways to cope and release the emotions.
