Every single thing we know about 'The Midnight Club' season 2

Spine-tingling Netflix series are not meant to be consumed in a single sitting, and yet the temptation is So! Dang! Strong! So, if you already binged Mike Flanagan’s newest series, The Midnight Club (which, FYI, is based on the 1994 young adult novel by Christopher Pike), and are ready for more—relax. Here’s everything we know about The Midnight Club season 2.

Spit it out: Has The Midnight Club been renewed for season 2?

Sadly, we now know the answer to this burning question, and it’s not what we were hoping for. On December 1, it was announced that Netflix had opted not to pick up The Midnight Club for a second season, on the heels of Mike and producing partner Trevor Macy jumping from the streamer to Amazon Studios for an exclusive, multiyear series production deal.

The executive producer had this to say about the show’s cancellation via a Tumblr post (okay, still, a pretty iconic way to make any type of announcement if you ask me):

“I’m very disappointed that Netflix has decided not to pursue a second season of THE MIDNIGHT CLUB. My biggest disappointment is that we left so many story threads open, holding them back for the hypothetical second season, which is always a gamble. So I’m writing this blog as our official second season, so you can know what might have been, learn the fates of your favourite characters, and know the answers to those dangling story threads from the first season. So for those of you who want to know what we were planning to do, here's a look at what would have been season 2!”

In the post, Mike goes on to quite literally outline what the storyline would have looked like had the show been picked up for a second season. TL;DR: Not all heroes wear capes!

Should we have seen this coming sooner?

Honestly, although we were crossing our fingers in the hopes that the show would be renewed, Mike *did* kind of assure us that he’d have our back in case things didn’t work out.

In a Midnight Club Q&A back in October, he told reporters, “This was designed to be ongoing. I don’t know if it will. We’ll see how it goes and we probably won’t know for another month or so what Netflix wants to do...We also didn’t answer some of the bigger questions of the season. Those answers exist but were meant to be for the next season. If there isn’t one, I’ll put them up on Twitter. Then we’ll at least all be able to talk about it.” And although he wound up posting them on Tumblr instead of Twitter, ya can’t argue that the filmmaker stuck true to his word.

What else is Mike working on?

Oh, so much! For Netflix, he’s adapting The Fall of the House of Usher, by Edgar Allen Poe. FWIW, some think this could technically be the third The Haunting...installation since it’s set to star a lot of the same cast members, but according to what a source close to the project told Variety, the show “will be a standalone series and will not have any connection to previous [Flanagan] series,” explained the outlet.

Mike is also co-adapting the comic book series Something is Killing the Children for Netflix and was announced as the director for an adaptation of Christopher Pike’s The Season of Passage. So even though there’s no more The Midnight Club, we’re still bound to get tons more from him!
