5 Ways to Maintain Workout Hygiene

Gyms have opened and you may have renewed your membership, which mean you now frequent the gym but with masks, hand sanitisers, other precautions and you have been maintaining social distancing. Is that enough? Has it struck you that there are other microscopic organisms lurking in workout areas that are potentially unhealthy? “These are germs and fungi that cause painful conditions like athlete’ foot, ring worm, jock itch etc. And then there are bacteria that can make things quite unpleasant,” says Daniel Vaz, marathon coach. Lets look at it this way. Breaking into a sweat during the warm up is certainly exhilarating, but the body odour that accompanies it can be embarrassing. “Bacteria are present on the skin and they react with sweat to cause body odour,” explains Daniel. The good news is there are simple things that you can do to maintain hygiene, feel fresh and good about working out. Daniel suggests some effective tips.

"Wear clean workout apparel that is washed and dried each time you wear them. Choose fabric that wicks away sweat, breathes and keeps you dry".

"Carry an alcohol based hand sanitizer to enable you to safely handle water bottles, jump ropes, cones, mats, etc".

"Make sure you wash your yoga mat with soap and water after each session. There are numerous and tiny holes in such mats that are breeding grounds for fungi".

"Make it a point to shower as soon as possible after your workout. Avoid the urge to nap on the sofa or go out to eat in your sweaty workout attire. Bacteria thrive on sweaty clothes".

Sweat is the body’ physiological response to heightened metabolic activity and the accompanying increase in its core temperature. The downside is that it can inevitably result in body odour. It is one factor that can alienate you from inclusion in workout camaraderie with friends. When you work out with gym mates or fellow athletes, smelling good is something that can add to the ‘feel good’ factor during exercise. Don't let body odour stop you from doing what you love, instead incorporate some of the tips listed above for a good workout experience.
