These Pigeons are Monitoring London's Air Pollution with Tiny GPS Equipped Backpacks!

In other 'Awesome/Bizarre Animal News'...

A squad of ten pigeons in London that has taken the responsibility to raise awareness about rising levels of air pollution in the city.

A sentence we never thought we'd ever read. Like, EVER.

But these super (cool) birds are strapped with backpacks that have pollution sensors and GPS trackers to keep the Londoners updated with the pollution status.

And their awesomeness doesn't stop just there. Get this, they have a Twitter account as well!

PigeonAir (the twitter handle) tweets information about nitrogen dioxide reading in different areas and you can track their locations online via a live map!

This project has been initiated by a marketing company after a recent study which revealed that almost 9,500 people die premature death in city due to long term exposure to the polluted air. These deaths are caused by two key pollutants- Nitrogen Dixide and PM 2.5s, which even impacts birds by causing lung damage and weight loss.

These Super Birds (Coco, Julius , Nobert, some of them have names too, FYI), are not the first ones to assist in surveillance.

Vultures in Lima, Peru have also been used for such projects, where the backpacks with GPS trackers and hi-tech cameras were equipped to spot illegal garbage dumping sites!
