How to Do the 'Reverse Cowgirl' Sex Position Really, Really Well

'Reverse Cowgirl' - which we're renaming The Rider because not everyone bouncing around on top of someone else is a girl, duh - is a classic sex position. But that doesn't mean attempting it isn't scary as hell. Do you like, get on top and then twist yourself around? Or is it easier to get on while you're ass-to-face, and back into it slowly?

As far as 'woman-on-top' (or as I like to call them, vulva-on-top, because inclusivity) positions go, this one can be a little intimidating. Why would you want to try it? Being on top puts you in control so you can move around in a way that feels good for you. Plus, riding away will leave your vulva/clit exposed for extra, external stimulation. So, Lovehoney sex expert Sammi Cole explains how to master it.

What is Reverse Cowgirl?

Reverse Cowgirl (the sex position where the partner on top straddles the penetrating partner, and faces towards their feet) is one of the UK’s favourite sex positions. Almost one in seven people (14%) chose it as their favourite in a Lovehoney survey.

It can be achieved no matter your gender identity or sexuality - if there's no penis involved, you can always use a strap-on.

Get into position

The penetrating partner should lie on their back, while the partner on top straddles them with their knees, either side of the lower partner’s hips.

Or, if it's more comfortable, they can squat over their partner, with their feet flat on the bed.

When they’re both ready (and have used plenty of lube, slowly lower onto the penis or sex toy.)

Move on up

The partner on top is very much in control, so mix it up and do whatever feels best by varying the speed, and depth of the penetration.

Try moving back and forth, or in circles, instead of just up and down.

If you're a woman or vagina-having person, try arching your back, which changes the angle of penetration and allows the penetrating partner to stimulate the G-spot.

Get handy

This position provides easy access to the clitoris if it’s vulva-owning partner on top, so why not give a helping hand if necessary?

The vast majority of women and people with vaginas find it tricky to climax through intercourse alone, and need extra stimulation. You can introduce a bullet vibe into proceedings to add some more fun.

Switch around

If the penetrating partner has testicles, the partner on top can play with them as they continue to grind.

Or if the partner on top starts getting tired, the lower partner can wrap their hands around their hips to help with the thrusting.

This is also a great position to experiment with some soft bondage items like a blindfold or some handcuffs.

Enjoy the view

Position yourself in front of a mirror in the bedroom, and watch each other as you gain momentum. The visual stimulation can really add extra excitement for both partners.

Lots of people love this position because they get an amazing view of their partner’s butt.

Plus, for many couples, it can be an exciting switch-up in the power dynamics of the relationship.
