11 Women Share the Most Surprising Thing About Moving In Together

There are always milestones in any relationship: the first time you kiss, the first time you meet the parents, the first time you fall asleep on his chest and accidentally drool on his shirt. (Nope? Just me?) But moving in with each other is always a big one and comes with its own unique revelations. To get a little more perspective on the reality of living with a partner, we asked 11 women the most surprising thing that happened when they moved in with their person, and the responses range from adorably sweet to downright cautionary.

1. "When I first moved in with my boyfriend, I think I was most surprised by how domestic he could be. I knew what he was like in the dorms freshman year of college, and because of that, I just assumed he'd always be kind of messy and maybe even a little bit lazy when it came to basic household chores (sorry, babe). In our two years of living together, though, he's made us amazing dinners nearly every night, and he always does more than his fair share of dishes and laundry. It's actually kind of embarrassing how little I end up doing around the house with him around." —Heather, 22

2. "Moving in with my girlfriend totally ruined our relationship. You don't realize just how much time you're spending together and finances are always so tricky." —Molly, 21

3. "I didn't expect to miss being alone as badly as I did. Spending every waking and sleeping moment with someone can be draining after awhile even if they're your partner." —Savannah, 22

4. "He got way clingier when we moved in together. This is clearly the point at which you see your partner's real flaws." —Scotlyn, 22

5. "He's actually a lot cleaner than anticipated."—Kelsey, 23

6. "How absolutely easy it was ... beyond the actual moving all of our stuff into a tiny studio apartment. We had been friends before we began dating and had been together for four years before we moved in with each other. It was just such a natural transition."—Cristin, 31

7. "I didn't expect moving in with my partner to boost my self-esteem, but in my experience, it definitely did. As we grew more comfortable around each other, our boundaries definitely lowered (hello, not shaving for two weeks), but it also boosted my confidence to discover that my BF still thinks I'm sexy if I skip a shower or come home super sweaty from the gym." —Kate, 23

8. "How infrequently I need pajamas now!" —Leslie, 24

9. "I think the most surprising thing for me is I haven't really learned anything about him I didn't already know. People say, 'You don't really know someone until you move in together,' but when you've been dating someone for almost seven years, you actually do know his habits, likes, and dislikes from spending so much time together, vacationing and sleeping over. I had this fear that moving in together would expose some hidden secrets I never knew, but so far, none have come up."—Jessica, 22

10. "How they change in the course of months. Things just change when you live together. You become more of friends than partners. I hated it and will never do it again unless I'm married." —Ashley, 25

11. "I don't ever get tired of being around him, even when I want to punch him for being such a guy about things." —Caitlin, 22
