We've all heard the saying that you should never go to bed on an argument – and now scientific research has suggested it may not just damage your relationship, but your health too.
Scientists observed 600 couples and found we're more likely to enjoy deep, restorative sleep when our partners are loving towards us.
We need this type of sleep to enjoy optimum health, but to experience it we must first feel safe, secure, and free from any threats – such as tension or arguments.
'Our findings show that individuals with responsive partners experience lower anxiety and arousal, which in turn improves their sleep quality,' lead author Dr Emre Selçuk, a developmental and social psychologist at Middle East Technical University in Turkey, wrote in the journal Social Personality and Psychological Science.
'Having responsive partners who would be available to protect and comfort us should things go wrong is the most effective way for us humans to reduce anxiety, tension and arousal.'
So there you go – a scientific reason to settle that next row before you go to bed.
