A Last-Minute Heart Transplant Saved This Baby's Life

At just 7 months old, Lincoln Seay's heart-transplant surgery came down to the wire. Doctors knew Lincoln's new heart was on the way when he went into cardiac arrest, according to Q13FOX. Unable to wait any longer, the surgeon opened the baby's chest and began massaging the failing organ until the new heart arrived.

Unbelievably, the heart arrived in the nick of time, saving little Lincoln's life.

Lincoln was born July 14, 2015, with a rare birth defect: All of his organs were on the opposite of his body.

"They even said, he may not survive birth," his mom, Mindy Seay, told the outlet. The newborn had surgery just hours after his birth. But a few months later, his heart started to fail. The family relocated from Alaska to Oregon to get Lincoln the care he needed. They put him on a list for a new heart in November, and Lincoln spent the next months in a hospital bed, waiting for it.

Finally, it was Lincoln's turn for a donor heart, but then the family had to wait for up to 90 days for it to arrive.

"It was tough because we knew Lincoln was facing an uphill battle," his dad, Rob Seay, told Q13FOX. "The last two days it's fair to say that I kind of fell apart a little bit. You just feel this despair and emptiness, you know, like time's up and my son is on his last leg."

Last month, doctors at Seattle Children's Hospital performed the miraculous, last-minute surgery, saving Lincoln's life.

The doctors tell the family that Lincoln's prognosis looks good, but they're monitoring to make sure his immune system doesn't reject the new organ.
