"I Really Woke Up Like This"

We got some of our favourite women to share their barefaced morning selfies to help nix the pressures of unrealistic beauty standards (full faces of make-up, included). Bonus: they spill the beans on what’s in their beauty arsenal.

“Being an actor, I have to wear make-up almost everyday. And because of that, one gets used to seeing a flawless face. But it’s really important to step back from all that, and embrace yourself the way you are—with all your little imperfections, marks, etc.”
“Nobody has perfect skin...that’s the truth! But young girls need to understand that what you see in movies isn’t real, and shouldn’t feel pressured into being ‘perfect’. There are days when my skin looks great, and on some days, it doesn’t...there’s nothing you can do about it, so why worry?”
“I feel, if you have great skin, you’ll always feel confident, no matter what—and for that, I make sure I live and eat clean. I stick to cleansers recommended by my derm, and religiously use the SK II Facial Treatment Essence and La Prairie Cellular Radiance Cream. As for the occasional zits, fresh aloe vera gel is my go-to!”
“I love all things natural. My daily skincare regime comprises of a homemade scrub made of dry orange peels—it has Vitamin C, which is a great brightening agent. And since I have really dry skin, I use coconut oil to moisturise it, after. I’ve stuck to this combination for years, and it really works wonders.”
“I don’t really wear make-up, unless it’s for a show. But I exfoliate twice a day, as I like squeaky-clean skin. I always keep my brows trimmed and shaped, as they define your face. I want girls to understand that beauty is about accepting who you are, and learning to not care what people think of you.”
“Instead of wearing a full face of make-up during the day time, I just like to define my brows—it really makes a difference. I use the Himalaya Face Wash Gel twice a day, and swear by the Dior Capture Totale Intensive Restorative Night Creme. Also, I alternate this cream with pure rosehip oil, every couple of days.”
“I like to stick to a simple routine to protect my skin. I start by exfoliating my face in the morning and follow it up with La Mer’s The Eye Concentrate and Moisturizing Soft Cream. I love Aquaphor Healing Ointment—it keeps my lips hydrated. Additionally, I use aloe vera gel to balance the pH levels, and cool the surface.”
“I have always had problematic skin and it breaks out pretty easily... So I’m used to seeing a not-so-perfect face. Make-up is a great tool to cover up, but that’s not all you need to feel great about yourself. I wear make-up only when I need to go out, and let my skin breathe otherwise.”
“I rarely wear make-up... At 45, I belong to the generation of women who didn’t really have a lot of products to choose from, so, I guess, I’ve always just kept it simple. I keep myself well hydrated, work out every day, and wear sunscreen...and I guess that’s worked in my favour, as my skin isn’t too terrible.”
“My saviours are sunscreen and water (lots if it!). My daily routine is pretty simple: I’m a fan of Kiehl’s products, and use their Daily Reviving Concentrate during the day and the Midnight Recovery Concentrate at night. I feel one should stick to just a couple of products and let them work on your skin, rather than trying everything that launches.”
“Beauty, at the moment, is all about showing off the real you...sans make-up. I’m very careful about what I slather on my skin. I don’t mind a few spots or zits here and there, but I would never put on excessive make-up to change the way I look. Along with that, I practice yoga daily, and that keeps my skin healthy.“
“I love running, and I feel that’s where I get the glow from! When your mind and body are healthy, it shows on your skin. I’m a firm believer of that. I don’t use too many products...just a moisturiser and sunscreen, and make sure I never skip on running.”
