1. USING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS

Use volumising shampoos, and a volume-enhancing root-lift spray when drying your hair to make the hair stand up from the scalp giving it a thicker appearance. And avoid leave-in conditioners and heavy hair-sprays which flatten fine hair.

2. IMPROVE YOUR DIET

A lack of minerals can cause hair loss, so eat iron-rich foods such as liver, kidney, branflakes and soya products. Protein and zinc are also important. Foods with zinc include wheatgerm, pumpkin seeds, egg yolk and shellfish - so if you're suffering from hair loss keep up your intake of these vital foods.

3. FIND THE RIGHT SUPPLEMENTS AND VITAMINS

There are claims that sea kelp supplements can help prevent hair falling out and thinning. These are available from health food shops. And if you find it hard to keep up your zinc and/or iron intake (both of which help boost immunity and protect against thinning hair), you could try zinc and iron supplements.

4. TWO TOP HAIRSTYLING TRICKS

Layers can give a sense of volume to hair that is thinning. Combining this with a large-curl will make the hair look even thicker.

5. COLD WASH YOUR HAIR

Not everyone agrees that this works, but some hair experts claim that blasting thinning and fine hair with a cool or cold water final rinse will close the cuticle and help hair to swell slightly so that it looks thicker.

6. HEAD MASSAGE

Not a dead cert this one, but exponents claim Indian head massage increases blood circulation to the scalp which strengthens the hair roots. Masseurs use coconut, almond, olive or sesame oil to nourish the hair while promoting circulation through massage.
