Low-rise jeans are squeezing back into fashion—here’s how to wear them in 2026

Forget the Y2K cosplay; this is your modern guide to styling low-rise denim with polish, proportion, and personality.

Few denim silhouettes are as era-defining as the low-rise jean. For many of us, it conjures up early-2000s music videos, mall corridors, and a collective obsession with hip bones. Then came the reign of high-rise everything, and we confidently declared we’d never return. But fashion has a short memory, and an even shorter attention span. Nostalgia is once again steering the trend cycle, and low-rise jeans have officially re-entered the chat.

In 2026, they’re less about reliving 2002 and more about refining it. Reimagined by style heavyweights like Rihanna, Bella Hadid, Dakota Johnson, and Kendall Jenner, today’s low-rise revival is about balance, intention, and elevated styling. And if you're planning on re-introducing them to your closet, here’s how you can make them feel current, without looking like you raided a 2003 costume trunk.

Rethink the silhouette

Modern low-rise isn’t necessarily skin-tight and ultra-low. Think relaxed, slouchy cuts that sit comfortably on the hips. Rihanna has championed low-slung, baggy denim with volume through the leg, proving that ease is the new sexy. A roomier shape feels directional and effortless, especially when paired with sharp accessories.

Keep the top half polished

The easiest way to modernise low-rise jeans is to avoid the micro-crop tops. Instead, anchor the look with refined basics: ribbed tanks, crisp white tees, oversized button-downs, and maybe even knitwear. A classic baby tee can still work, especially in white, but styled with Bosten Birkenstocks (I would suggest the baby pink ones!).

Layering is your best friend. Structured blazers, trench coats, and tailored jackets instantly elevate the silhouette, particularly for autumn. A rugby shirt half-tucked into relaxed denim creates a sporty, off-duty vibe.

Master the proportions

Low-rise styling lives and dies by proportion. If your jeans are loose and slouchy, balance them with a more fitted top. If you’re wearing a slimmer cut, offset it with oversized layers. This push-and-pull keeps the outfit dynamic and flattering.

Bella Hadid has mastered this formula, pairing low low-rise denim with chunky belts, layered jewellery, and statement outerwear to create a silhouette that feels intentional.

Let accessories do the heavy lifting

Speaking of the above, accessories are what separate “Y2K throwback” from “2026 It-girl.” Think chunky belts, chain belts, long-handle shoulder bags, and sleek sunglasses. A structured shoulder bag instantly sharpens the look.

Now, footwear matters more than you think, since it peeks out from under the hem. Loafers and derbies ground the outfit with polish, while boots add edge. For something softer, try kitten heels with a cardigan-and-tank combination for an understated night-out ensemble.

Low-rise jeans, when styled with thoughtful proportions, polished basics, and considered accessories, feel less like a trend and more like a styling choice.

Fashion’s biggest myth is that certain pieces belong to certain decades. In reality, everything returns; it just needs a fresh perspective. So if you’re tempted to dip your toe (or hip) back into low-rise territory, do it with intention. Because in 2026, it’s not about dressing like your teenage self, it’s about out-styling her.
