How to Keep Curly Hair Smooth and Frizz-Free

Whether you like it or not, a poofy, frizzy mane comes with the curly hair territory. That said, excessive frizziness can certainly be kept in check by procuring the right hair care arsenal and by making effective tweaks to your beauty regime. Dhruv Madhok, Co-Founder, Arata, elucidates the many ways you can achieve soft, well-defined curls in no time; take note, beauty girls.

Ditch Harsh Shampoos

Refraining from harsh, chemical-laden products that strip the hair off of its natural oils is paramount—particularly those that include sulphate, an ingredient that has a poor reputation amongst curly hair girls. "This surfactant, usually found in shampoos, robs your curls of moisture and strips away its natural oils, giving them a dry, dull, and rough appearance. Besides, as you might already know, curly hair is more prone to dryness than any other hair type. Hence, it is important to pick a shampoo that cleanses the scalp gently, as well as offers hydration and moisturisation to the strands," he explains.

Refresh Your Curls In-Between Wash Days

Believe it or not, a bunch of factors determine how long your curls will last until your next shower—from workouts to the weather, and even your bedtime routine (do you sleep with a bonnet on?) If you’re looking to extend your wash days all while keeping your curls beautiful and bouncy, here’s what you can do: Begin by doing away with the pesky knots and tangles using a detangling spray. Spritz generously on damp curls and use a wide-toothed comb to undo the knots; this should reduce hair breakage, untangle, and hydrate your hair. Next, apply a moisturising leave-in cream—this should clump your curls and give them an intense dose of hydration. Top it off with a hair gel for ultimate curl definition and hold. While applying the styling formula, scrunch or finger coil the hair to revive your juicy curls.

Moisturisation and Deep Condition

Frizz control begins in the shower; include a curl-quenching mask in your hair wash routine—ideally one that lends the smoothening properties of shea butter, hyaluronic acid, and natural oils. It’s simple: the key to tackling frizz is by boosting moisture. The greater the moisture present in your hair, the lesser the frizz. So load up with a conditioner that seeps deep into dry, coarse curls and locks in moisture, leaving your mane shiny, frizz-free and oh-so-soft to touch.

Style Your Hair When It’s Wet

Listen up; your curls are going to be in their luscious, smoothest form when they are wet. Styling damp hair is your best bet to keep frizz at bay. Plus, doing so enhances curl definition and ensures an even product distribution across the mane.
