I’m a sucker for skincare tools. After all, who doesn’t love an extra helping hand from a cleansing brush or a microcurrent massager? Bringing a tech-savvy, futuristic touch to your beauty routine, these devices are known to enhance the efficacy of your products, yielding better and more resilient results. The latest obsession? LED light therapy in every form.
Unlike basking in the sun and risking overexposure to harmful UV rays, LED light therapy has proven to have excellent beauty benefits. “It involves applying specific wavelengths (visible red, blue, yellow, or near-infrared) to the tissue,” explains board-certified dermatologist and founder of Skin Art Clinic, Dr Nidhi Singh Tandon. “The light goes into the skin and stimulates cells to work better.”
Its skin benefits include boosting energy (ATP), reducing inflammation and acne, increasing collagen, and supporting healing. And for hair, it can help follicles grow stronger, thicker strands and may improve hair density in cases of androgenetic alopecia.
While most people can use LED light therapy safely, Dr Tandon warns that those on light-sensitive medications or with conditions like lupus or porphyria should steer clear of these devices. “Even pregnant women or those with active cancers should consult with a doctor before use,” she advises.
Find your light
Red light (630–660 nm): Boosts collagen, reduces wrinkles, reduces inflammation, and improves healing.
Near-infrared light (800–850 nm): Goes deeper and helps with inflammation and tissue repair.
Blue light (400–500 nm): Kills acne-causing bacteria and controls oil.
Yellow and green light (~590 nm): Helps calm skin, reduce redness, and even out pigmentation.
