An inexplicable laziness sets in with cloudy skies, with a cheeky way of convincing you that your beauty routine can go on holiday. The sky is grey, the temperatures are lower, and suddenly sunscreen feels about as necessary as sunglasses at midnight. But while you may not feel the sun, your skin is still dealing with the elements. And that’s exactly why a few everyday essentials deserve to stay firmly in rotation.
The sun may be hiding behind a dramatic layer of clouds, but that doesn’t mean that your usual routine gets a day off. We’re here to ensure that you’re still following through on your beauty and wellness responsibilities with an easy edit ahead.
An effective sunscreen

Let’s start with the obvious one: SPF is not a seasonal commitment. UV rays can reach your skin even on cloudy days, so swapping sunscreen for wishful thinking isn’t exactly the skincare strategy we’d recommend. Make a broad-spectrum sunscreen the final step of your morning skincare routine, particularly if you’re heading outdoors. And if your sunscreen doubles as a moisturiser or sits beautifully under makeup? Even better.
A pretty lip balm

Your lips have very few natural oils to protect them, which means they can get dry surprisingly easily, even when it’s humid outside. Add rain, wind, air-conditioning, and suddenly you’re dealing with flaky, uncomfortable lips.
Keep a nourishing lip balm within arm’s reach and apply it throughout the day. Better yet, pick one with SPF for daytime because, yes, your lips need sun protection too. Top it up with your favourite lip gloss, or pick a tinted lip balm for a little bit of colour. That’s like the beauty equivalent of carrying an umbrella.
A light and hydrating moisturiser

Humidity isn’t hydration. In fact, the combination of humidity, rain, air-conditioning, and frequent cleansing can leave your skin feeling oddly tight or dehydrated.
A lightweight yet effective moisturiser can help support your skin barrier and keep your complexion comfortable. If you have oily or combination skin, go for a gel or lightweight lotion. Drier skin can benefit from something richer and more nourishing. Look for soothing ingredients like ceramides, glycerine, almond, and shea.
A handy deodorant and mini perfume

Even if we didn’t live in tropical climes, we’d recommend that you keep a mini version of your favourite fragrance at all times. And if you thought that cooler weather meant you could skip it, we have news. Humidity and rain can make you sweat even when the temperature doesn’t feel particularly high, and damp clothes certainly aren’t helping.

A reliable deodorant or antiperspirant can keep you feeling fresh, while a scented mist can add that little extra layer of freshness. Keep a travel-sized version in your bag for through the day spritzes.
A smoothening hair-serum

Your hair has its own relationship with humidity, and frankly, it can be a complicated one. Increased moisture in the air can contribute to frizz, while sweat and dampness around the scalp can leave the roots feeling oily.
You can use a lightweight leave-in conditioner, anti-frizz serum, or hair oil to help manage unruliness and roughness, and regular scalp cleansing can keep buildup at bay.
A refreshing face mist

Overcast weather may feel gentler, but it can still leave your complextion feeling out of sorts. Between the pouring rain and dehydrating air-conditioning, a hydrating face mist is an easy way to give your skin a quick refresh throughout the day. Look for formulations with ingredients such as rose, jasmine, or aloe vera, and spritz whenever your skin needs a little pick-me-up. Some new variants even offer a silken, serum-like finish, offering a skincare-infused radiance.
A gentle exfoliant

If your complexion is looking a little lacklustre, it might be because sweat, sunscreen, makeup, and everyday buildup accumulated, making it look dull or congested.
A gentle exfoliant containing AHAs, BHAs or PHAs can help smooth and brighten the skin without the need for aggressive scrubbing. The key word is gentle: you don’t need to exfoliate every day, and overdoing it can compromise your skin barrier, and applying a thick layer of moisturiser or baby oil after is key. Exfoliation once a week is good for a little reset!
The takeaway is this: A grey sky might change your outfit, your plans and your playlist, but it certainly doesn’t need to rewrite your usual beauty routine. SPF, lip balm, moisturiser, hydration, and the rest of your everyday essentials still deserve their place in your routine. The weather may be moody, but your skincare doesn’t have to be.
