Met Gala 2020 postponed due to Coronavirus

The biggest fashion event of the year Met Gala 2020 that would have seen the who’s who of tinsel town turn up in their fineries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, has been postponed due to Coronavirus. The event, which is held every year on the first Sunday of May, has now been pushed to a later date.

Anna Wintour, Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief released a statement on March 16 that read: “Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala, will not take place on the date scheduled."

The Met Gala has had interesting themes in the past such as Manus x Machina and Punk: Chaos to Couture, China Through the Looking Glass, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, Camp: Notes on Fashion and this year’s theme is About Time: Fashion and Duration. Our Bollywood belles Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone and heiress Isha Ambani have created quite a stir on the Met Gala red carpet in the past. Here’s a look at how Indians turned up at the previous Met Gala events.

Year: 2019; Theme: Camp: Notes on Fashion

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas Served Coordinated Drama

The newly wed couple arrived in coordinated silvery ornate ensembles. While PeeCee wore a frothy gray outfit from Dior replete with frizzy hair and bold makeup, Nick wore a white suit with bejwelled shirt and tie.

Deepika Padukone Turned up as a Pink Barbie

The Bollywood star wore a structural gown by Zac Posen covered with 3D printed embellishments. She channeled a futuristic Barbie meets Disney Princess look that she finished off with purple eye makeup, bold lips and high pony tail.

Isha Ambani's Princess Vibes

The heiress looked every bit the modern princess in a refreshing lavender, full-skirted gown embellished with feathers and beads by Prabal Gurung. Her subtle makeup and sleek hair got her much appreciation back home.

Year: 2018; Theme: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

Priyanka Chopra’s Beaded Hood

The actor hit the Met Gala red carpet in a deep burgundy velvet gown by Ralph Lauren with a train, topped with a golden hood. Though many turned up in crowns and crosses for the theme Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, her ornate hood made for a unique look. She paired subtle Cartier jewellery with hood made of red Swarovski crystals and golden beading.

Deepika Padukone Goes Red

Padukone made an appearance wearing a structured scarlet gown by Prabal Gurung. The one shoulder gown with a thigh high slit was inspired by the structure of the robes of cardinals to fit into the theme of the 2018 event.

Year: 2017; Theme: Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between

PeeCee's Dramatic Train

This was the year when PC made her debut at Met Gala in Ralph Lauren trench-coat-gown with a long train and popped collars that generated various memes. This was one of her most talked about looks. However, the event not only made her a social media hit but also served as backdrop for her romantic liaison with Nick Jonas.

Deepika Padukone's Ivory Number

This was Deepika’s debut year too. She kept it with a satin ivory, backless Tommy Hilfiger gown. She paired the gown with an embellished floral headband and earrings. Though she made for a pretty picture, she looked more like a coy bride, not in sync with the theme Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between that paid a tribute to the Japanese fashion designer known for creating outrageously avant-garde designs.

Isha Ambani Makes a Dazzling Debut

Many missed spotting Isha on her Met Gala debut. Dressed in a beige Dior couture gown, she kept her makeup minimal. The only accessory she used was a clutch from Dior. Subtle and elegant, she did impress with her choice of ensemble.
