Demi Lovato posted an image of herself on Instagram, and the Internet hasn’t stopped talking about it since. With good reason. It had the singer posing in a bikini—from a series she has already posted earlier….nothing new there. However, it came with a note from Demi—about her “biggest fear”. It was a photo of her in a bikini, “unedited”, in which she called out body-shamers, and declared to her 73.6m followers that she’ll be “authentic to who I am rather than trying to meet someone else’s standards” in this new chapter of her life.
“I’m just literally sooooo tired of being ashamed of my body, editing it (yes the other bikini pics were edited—and I hate that I did that but it’s the truth) so that others think I’m THEIR idea of what beautiful is, but it’s just not me. This is what I got,” Demi wrote. “So here’s me, unashamed, unafraid and proud to own a body that has fought through so much and will continue to amaze me when I hopefully give birth one day”.
The actress, recovering from a near-fatal overdose, also spoke about how, with the baggage of looking perfect all the time off her chest, she feels great to be back on screen without having to stress about a strenuous workout schedule ahead of 14-hour work day, or deprive herself of a real birthday cake and choose watermelon and whipped cream with candles, instead!
While the “REAL, RAW” image was far from the perfectly glossy, airbrushed photographs one is used to seeing of celebrities, it definitely was a much-needed post in the right direction—mind, soul, body positivity. ’Coz, body shaming is never okay. Never.
#CelluLIT or #RippedFit, it’s #noneofyourbusiness. While we can’t emphasise it enough, here are some other stars like Demi who bravely stood up to fat-shaming, and called out trolls like the rockstars they are…
2. Selena Gomez
The singer had posted some images of her in a bikini, and let’s just say that many on the Internet were rather cruel.
A kidney transplant and mental-health issues later, Selena didn’t let this bum her out and responded to the backlash with a video of her friends, saying, “The beauty myth—an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfil society’s impossible definition of flawless beauty. I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone….”
3. Neha Dhupia
The actor was shamed for the weight she had gained post pregnancy. Really, now?! She wasn’t having any of it, and took to the ’Gram. “I don’t owe anyone an explanation because fatshaming like this doesn’t bother me one bit. But I do want to address this as a larger problem because fatshaming needs to stop for EVERYONE, not just celebs. As a new mom i want to be fit, healthy and energetic for my daughter. So I work out everyday, sometimes twice a day because for me...’Fitness’ is a priority and not ‘fitting into’ society’s standards regarding looks. And I hope in the future people are kinder to each other while making such vapid and vile comments….” she wrote.
4. Drew Barrymore
The actress was being called all sorts of impolite things because of her weight gain. It reached an all-time low when a stranger actually walked up to her and asked her if she was “pregnant”?. “No, just fat,” she is said to have retorted.
The actress took to Instagram to talk about life and the imperfections it comes with, juxtaposing two photographs to etch the thought better. “…Sure, I can be this with two hours of hair and makeup and amazing photography and lighting…But it all takes work… What I can’t hide is that some days are difficult and not so pretty... But sometimes life can just get to you and take you down for a minute!... But we cry and then pick ourselves up and put one foot in front of the other. Can anyone relate?”
US *raising both hands*!
5. Vidya Balan
The actress has been on the receiving end of fat-shaming for a while now—while her curves were lost on some, others wondered how she can be an A-list actress without ‘fitting the bill’.
The actress gave the trolls a piece of her mind, loud and clear, with an Insta post, with a message that was along the lines of, “To me and to you.. and to us all. #ItsTime to #EmbraceYourself.... starting today if you’ve never done it before...#ItsTime to love yourself body, mind & soul.. just the way you are! Lets not wait to become thinner or fairer or smarter or hotter or cooler or richer or more successful or anything that you are not already... #ItsTime to say goodbye to every judgement that makes you feel…” You get the drift….
Rihanna has had to face lot of flak for gaining weight. Not that it affects the singer (boy! do we love her or do we love her!). Once a fan had posted a video of her coming out of a departmental store, loaded with snacks. There was suddenly a deluge of mean comments about the weight the singer had put on, and how she could be pregnant.
Rihanna replied on the post, “Somebody called me too fat? 😂😂😂" She didn’t stop there. Later, she even posted a meme, to drive the point home.
