12 Bollywood Celebrities Who Underwent Major Body Transformations For Their Movies

From putting on a few—or more—kilos to shedding calories if the role demands, these actors' bodies took a dramatic course while prepping for films.

Dwayne Johnson, Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, and Jonah Hill often come to mind when we talk about dramatic body transformations. Although keeping Hollywood aside, several Indian actors including Hritik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Bhumi Pednekar, and others, have also undergone the arduous process of bulking up or shedding extra calories. While it seems that these sudden physical transformations are solely fueled by the motive to look better than the rest, it's usually because a character role demands it—part and parcel of the job, if we may say so. Below, we have shortlisted several actors who've either had to put on or lose a tremendous amount of weight for a movie role.

Hritik Roshan

Known to be a fitness enthusiast, Hritik Roshan has always sported a chiselled, bulky look. However, during the shooting of 'Super 30', he let himself go. However, within the span of two months, the actor had to get his washerboard abs back for his role in 'War', alongside Tiger Shroff. "After Super 30, the fat content of my body was too much. My body had become lazy and I was given only two months to get in shape and it wasn’t enough. I started this film on a bit of a back foot because my body was not ready," revealed the actor in an interview.

Farhan Akhtar

While the actor underwent a major body transformation for his role in 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', he ended up putting on the weight again, over the years. Although recently, Farhan took to social media to share a transformation image of himself, which he captioned, "The many shapes and sizes of Ajju aka Aziz aka Toofaan. What a ride. 18 months of relentless work but worth every drop of sweat, every sore muscle, and every pound gained and lost."

Aamir Khan

Following the life of a wrestler from his young days to late adulthood, Aamir Khan had to flaunt a pot belly as well as defined abs through the course of his film 'Dangal'. While the actor was given the choice to wear a bodysuit, he opted for a fully natural transformation that would look authentic on screen. Reportedly, his body fat percentage plummeted from 38 per cent to just 9 per cent in five months.

Bhumi Pednekar

Bhumi Pednekar agreed to gain 23 kgs for her role as Sandhya in 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha', and lost it after the film wrapped up. In an interview, the actor said, "I started developing health problems. My back and joints started aching… My diet was unhealthy. I don’t have a problem with being overweight. That’s fine. But there’s a thin line between being unhealthy and overweight...I’m content with the way I am right now. I’m not skinny, and I like that."

Sara Ali Khan

Before entering the industry, Sara Ali Khan was an overweight girl—96 kgs to be precise—dealing with PCOD that further triggered weight gain. Although, she wasn't ready to let her weight come in the way of her dreams. Before making her debut with 'Kedarnath', she decided to shed the extra calories and tone up. "For me, it all started in New York. I weighed 96 kg and had a year to go before I graduated. The transition from pizza to salad and from lethargy to cardio is how I kickstarted my fitness journey. I simply started eating healthy and began working out when in New York," revealed the actor in an interview.

Kriti Sanon

Did you know that Kriti Sanon put on 15 kgs for her recent film 'Mimi'? The actor took to Instagram to share a compilation of her workouts, and wrote, "While putting on 15 kgs for Mimi was a challenge, losing those kilos wasn’t easy for Chubby Sanon either! And.. I had kept 'param sundari' (the song) for later, so I have the motivation to get back in shape! Having put on so much weight for the first time ever and not working out for 3 months (not even yoga!), my stamina, strength, and flexibility had gone down to zero! In fact, I had to slowly get back to mobility with my joints clicking constantly."

Arshad Warsi

Three days ago, the 'Golmaal' actor shared a picture of himself flexing his muscles. "Long way to go, but getting in shape for my next project," he captioned the post. In fact, American Wrestler John Cena also reposted the image on his own Instagram handle, leaving netizens thrilled. Arshad Warsi took to Twitter to respond. "John Cena posted my pic on his Instagram page...I am quite kicked about it (sic)," he said.

Emraan Hashmi

The 42-year-old actor also recently posted a beefed up photograph of himself on social media. While he didn't mention the movie that demanded the muscular physique, fans believe it could be for Tiger 3, alongside Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. Over the past few months, Emraan has been updating his fans about his progress by posting transformation pictures.

Ranveer Singh

For Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmaavat', the actor built a daunting muscular physique to fit into Sultan Alauddin Khilji's shoes. However, for 'Gully Boy', the actor had to portray the role of a skinny rapper from the slums of Mumbai. And once again, he had to bulk up for Rohit Shetty's 'Simmba', where he played the role of a cop.

Rajkummar Rao

Rajkummar Rao underwent a major physical transformation for his film 'Badhaai Do'. He took to Instagram to share a picture, and wrote, "#ShardulThakur in #BadhaaiDo. Being a pure vegetarian and to strictly avoid any kind of steroids, it wasn’t easy to get this transformation but nothing seems impossible when you love what you do. #BadhaaiDo is a film which is really close to my heart and we had a blast shooting this film."

Kangana Ranaut

Ahead of the trailer launch of her film 'Thalaivi', Kangana Ranaut shared stills from her film, for which she gained 20 kgs. "Gaining 20 kgs and loosing it all back within a span of few months wasn’t the only challenge that I faced while filming this Epic Biopic, wait is getting over just in few hours Jaya will be your forever," she tweeted.

Taapsee Pannu

Taapsee Pannu will soon be seen in sports film 'Rashmi Rocket', playing the role of a sprinter. "I didn’t have the liberty being a female actor to sit at home while I build my muscle and get my body ready for the film, I had to do other films simultaneously. I was shooting for multiple other films while I was training for Rashmi Rocket," she revealed.
