'Easy-going’ is a phrase people rarely associate with her. “I’m very aware that I’m thought of as ‘serious’. People think I take myself very seriously. But I’d concede to moody, at best. Some days, I want to growl at people and have no desire to interact with them. But most days, I’m a lot more chipper than people expect.”
We do a quick assessment. The girl claims she makes ‘more fun of herself than anyone’—and lives up to it. She later proudly announces that “I drive like a goddamn rally driver (I’m not a good driver, or even a good parallel- parker, but you do not f*ck with my driving).” And lastly, over a fast, mid- shot lunch of chicken biryani (“Veg biryani? What’s that, an oxymoron?”) regales us with an anecdote of her “pretending to be a thug by wearing a giant, oversize hoodie and walking with extra swag,” back when she used to live in a super-sketchy part of London (to keep herself safe, of course). Nope, ‘serious’ is not the overall impression we’re left with about Kalki Koechlin.
Here's a rapid fire with Kalki from our August'17 issue, that you def shouldn't miss:
