Vanessa Hudgens clears the air on the High School Musical reunion

Just a few weeks apart, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, who played Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez, respectively, paid visits to the actual Salt Lake East High, the Wildcats' school (yes, we're screaming, too!). It all began when Vanessa posted a TikTok from outside the school with the iconic "Breaking Free" song that she had performed at the conclusion of the first film playing in the background.

 

Just a few weeks later, Disney fans were sent into a frenzy all over again when Zac visited the school and took a picture in front of the exact same spot as his former co-star and ex-girlfriend.

 

But what does this actually mean? Is there going to be a HSM reboot?

Here's the lowdown on why the HSM alumni have returned to East High and what the alleged HSM reunion is all about...

Vanessa claimed to Entertainment Weekly that everything was merely a coincidence. "My boyfriend was playing in Salt Lake—he's a baseball player, so he was at the field," she explains, "and I had rented a car and I was like I want to go check it out and take some pictures for old time’s sake. "And as for why Zac was also there around that time, Vanessa laughs and replies, "What can I say? I'm a trendsetter." The actress talked about her late-June visit to the famous set.

Vanessa, on the other hand, quoted Gabriella from HSM in the caption of her post, writing: "Do you remember in kindergarten how you'd meet a kid and know nothing about them, then 10 seconds later you're playing like you're best friends because you didn't have to be anything but yourself?" Zac referenced another teen high school movie in his caption, simply writing: "Don’t you … Forget about me," referencing Simple Minds' song from The Breakfast Club.

Fans have speculated as to why the two visited the school at the same time, with some speculating that they will appear as guests on the upcoming season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, that will star Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett.

This theory appears to be very likely, as Disney confirmed that when the students return for their first day back in Season 4, they will also discover that the school is being used to film the long-awaited High School Musical 4: The Reunion movie—and, even more exciting, they will all be featured extras. Even Corbin Bleu, Zac and Vanessa's former HSM co-star, is scheduled to appear as a fictionalized version of himself in season three of HSMTMTS, so perhaps the OG's will make an appearance?
