Rule 1: Learn to take your own decisions.
“Calling your parents for every little thing isn’t such a good idea—being able to think on your own is a big part of growing up. Sure, it’s okay to ask for advice on big life decisions, but your parents shouldn’t be your only source. You can—and should—turn to your friends and colleagues. Developing a circle of people whose advice you trust beyond just your parents’ is key to feeling like an independent adult.”

Rule 2: Cut the financial cord.
“Stop routinely taking money from your parents. A loan when your car explodes is one thing; it’s another if your life costs more than you earn and your fam makes up the difference. In that case, the solution isn’t their money—it’s getting your finances in order.”

Rule 3: Don’t say ‘yes’, if you mean ‘no’.
“This is really important. Being grown up means having the sense to take a stand and not always do stuff to make others happy.”

Rule 4: Understand that perfection takes time. Don’t give up easily.
“Expecting perfection the first time you do something is not only childish, it’s also being unfair to yourself. Don’t get discouraged and don’t give up.”

Rule 5: Remember that things will fall apart at times.
“Being grown up is about realising that there are good and bad days! Don’t crumble under pressure and believe in yourself.”
