Towards the end of the movie, a near-frozen Rose sees a sparkly night sky as Jack makes his way to the frozen afterlife. Unfortunately, that's not what a real Titanic survivor would have seen given the coordinates in the water, according to astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Ahead of the film's 15-year re-release in 2012, Cameron adjusted it and revealed that Tyson sent him a "snarky e-mail" pointing out the error. "And with my reputation as a perfectionist, I should have known that and I should have put the right star field in," said Cameron. "So I said, 'All right, send me the right stars for the exact time and I'll put it in the movie.'"

The door in Titanic is a larger version of a wooden panel that had split in two following the disaster. In 2018, the artifact will make its way from the Maritime Museum in Halifax, where it's been kept for decades, to the UK's Victoria and Albert Museum for an exhibition called Ocean Liners: Speed & Style, which vows to celebrate "the golden age of ocean travel."

Titanic was the first film to have two cast members — Winslet and Stuart — nominated for playing the same role. Sadly, both lost in their respective categories at the 1998 ceremony, but how about those 11 golden statues?

Director James Cameron used a decoy title in case other studios were making films about the RMS Titanic. Clever? Yes, but the fake title didn't stop Leonardo DiCaprio fans from congregating near the gates of Fox Baja Studios in Mexico during filming.

As in Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Jeremy Sisto of Clueless fame. (Jeremy even did a screen test with Kate Winslet, but obviously did not get the best test results.) Can you imagine anyone else wearing this (borrowed) suit to dinner in First Class?

"Isn't that weird?" Winslet said in 2017 on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. "Never said that in public before!" And just because of that, you get your own slide, McConaughey!

It would have been a great follow-up to 1996's Evita, which earned Madonna a Golden Globe for Best Actress. Also in the running: Nicole Kidman, Jodie Foster, Cameron Diaz, Sharon Stone, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

"I closed the script, wept floods of tears and said, 'Right, I've absolutely got to be a part of this. No two ways about it,'" she told Rolling Stone in 1998. A few calls later, she was on the phone with Cameron, who was in his car. "And I think he pulled over and I said, 'I just have to do this, and you are really mad if you don't cast me.'" Remember car phones?

It was a rose! A rose for Rose! According to Cameron in a behind-the-scenes special, Winslet also wrote "a note that basically said, 'I'm ready.'"

In the same 1998 Rolling Stone interview, Winslet revealed that she slipped out of a press junket to have a talk with him during the Cannes Film Festival. In 2016, DiCaprio shed some light on that conversation, telling Deadline, "We'd done all of these independent movies. I loved her as an actress and she said, 'Let's do this together, we can do this.' We did it, and it became something that we could've never foreseen."

It wasn't intentional, per se: "I was having my makeup put on – with nothing on – and there was Leo," Winslet told PEOPLE in 1998. "He saw me and went, 'Whooa!' and I said, 'We're going to spend the whole day like this; we might as well get over it now.' That broke the ice."

This, according to Cameron, who said DiCaprio "always made this big drama about getting wet." Eventually, he warmed up, quite literally, thanks to the crew members who poured buckets of warm water over the actor over months of filming. On the last day of filming, which took place underwater, Cameron lost sight of DiCaprio the cat. "I'm down there in my scuba equipment, and Leo comes down, and he's a total fish underwater. And he's [even] doing somersaults."

"I mean, if anybody else in the world did that, they'd get slapped, and the other person would walk away and not talk to them for a week," Cameron told Rolling Stone in 1998. "With Leo, Kate would just crack up." Added Billy Zane in the same interview, "Grossing Kate out was purely Leo's job. He was really good at it."

As the Rolling Stone profile revealed, the two would snuggle under a blanket in his trailer for these conversations. "You know, some very, very personal things, asking each other for advice. Not necessarily comparing notes but sort of, 'No, don't do it like that, do it like this.' He's very good at that. I have to say, a lot of those sexual tips he's given me have worked. And I know it's vice versa."

Lohan, who was 8 at the time, lost the role to Alexandrea Owens after Cameron expressed concern over Lohan's red hair being too similar to Rose and Ruth's fiery locks. The Parent Trap was released the following year.

Stuart was almost 2 when the RMS Titanic perished in the Atlantic. In 1998, she also became the oldest Academy Award nominee at 87 when she was up for Best Supporting Actress. (Unfortunately, she lost to Kim Basinger, who won for L.A. Confidential.)

Cameron and company spent $200 million to make the film in 1997, while the ship cost $7.5 million. As TIME pointed out in 2016, that number would be $180 million after adjusted inflation.

As hardcore Titanic fans know, Cameron was the skilled artist behind Jack's drawing of Rose wearing nothing but the Heart of the Ocean. In 2011, the drawing sold for "at least $16,000" in an auction, according to ABC News.

His name? Blizzard. No joke. Imagine being a lizard in 1996/1997 and belonging to future Oscar winner and eternal hottie Leonardo DiCaprio though...

It happened just after midnight on Aug. 9, 1996 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and according to Halifax Regional Police, someone had laced the lobster chowder with PCP or angel dust. Among those affected: Bill Paxton, who told EW, "One minute I felt okay. The next minute I felt so goddamn anxious I wanted to breathe in a paper bag. Cameron was feeling the same way." As one doctor put it, "These people were stoned." The case inspired several conspiracy theories, including one involving an angry chef that had been let go.

"I was really f*cking cold!" she told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show in November 2017 of the final scene with Jack in the water. "There were lots of big tanks, there was lots of water. That amount of water, I think honestly, they couldn't heat it. There was just too much of it."

"You know, when you gotta go, you gotta go," Winslet said on The Rosie O'Donnell Show while promoting the film. "It was so awful because Leo would sometimes say to me, 'Sweetie I gotta pee'… It was terrible. It was awful. And you always felt awful doing it. It took too long getting out, with the wet clothes. I confess. It happened. It happened."

According to Vanity Fair, at one point during production, DiCaprio leaned over Kathy Bates and asked, "Which one of these do I use to lobotomize myself?" while gesturing at the White Star Line cutlery.

According to Brett Baker, who was shorter than DiCaprio (and 7 years older than the actor), security guards would inform fans outside the gate that it was really Leo in the car. "They went berserk," Baker told Vanity Fair. "Screaming, looking inside the window, waving their pieces of paper for an autograph. The guards just thought this was so funny. I don't know if anyone knew that was going on at the gate every morning."

His line was supposed to be, "Lie on that couch," but instead, DiCaprio mumbled, "Lie on that bed. Uh, I mean couch." Spontaneity never looked hotter.

Instead, Winslet decided spitting in her fiancé's face would make for a better moment, according to Cameron. She was right.

It was Cameron's way of paying tribute to the three canine survivors of the RMS Titanic (two Pomeranians and one Pekinese made it out of the sinking ship). Cameron also filmed scenes portraying other animals who perished in the disaster but eventually left them on the cutting floor.

They're Ida and Isidor Straus, owners of Macy's Department Store in NYC. When the real Ida was led to a lifeboat, she refused, reportedly saying, "We have lived together for many years. Where you go, I go." An early cut of Titanic featured this scene but was later edited out.
