Couturier Monica Shah Reveals All That Went Into Designing Shibani Dandekar’s Bridal Ensemble

Here comes the unconventional bride; giving the traditional bridal hue a contemporary—and uber fashionable—update. After dating for over four years, Farhan Akhtar and Shibani Dandekar have put a ring on it. And, like a breath of fresh air, the anchor cum model has granted us a much-deserved break from heavily embroidered bridal lehengas, a hit amongst the slew of celebrity weddings that have gone by.

The thought behind her uncustomary choice? We got in touch with designer Monica Shah from JADE by Monica and Karishma, to run us through the entire ideating and designing process before Shibani said "yes" to the dress.

"From the get-go, Shibani was deeply involved in the design process. She was seeking something unique, albeit personal, and hence, opted for a modern corset and skirt with a veil—all while retaining the traditional bridal colour—rather than going for a bridal lehenga or sari. The entire ensemble was handcrafted by our master artisans, from French Chantilly Lace, on our signature vermillion red palette. The trail was about 3 meters long and the bridal veil around 5 meters in length and 100 inches in width," explains Monica.

"Shibani’s vision for her bridal ensemble was to create something that represented her Indian roots, but also celebrated her global outlook—and, we brought her vision to life by designing an attire that is glamorous yet understated, highlighting exquisite Indian artistry," she went on to add. When we asked Monica what the mood for bridal couture is this year, she said, "Glamorous, unique, and personal. An increasing number of brides are breaking the templates of bridal dressing, and are seeking custom solutions that resonate with who they are and their personal journey."

Has Shibani Dandekar paved the way for brides to consider flattering silhouettes, contemplate their cliché choices, and break away from the norm? Well, we certainly hope so.
