It’s Time to Join the Stripe Tribe!

Yes, they have been around on the fashion scenes forever, but stripes have taken on a new avatar this summer and are bound to flaunt on many a silhouette. Moving away from its nautical origins (navies across the globe feature stripes in their uniforms), this pattern is now being interpreted in more fun and innovative ways. As seen on the Spring/Summer 2022 runways of Jil Sander and Kenneth Ize, stripes can be even more potent if combined with the elements of colour, contrast, and placement. So, here’s a look at some ways you too can wear your stripes, the celeb way, and upgrade your style quotient.

Bold is definitely better when it comes to choosing your stripey outfit this summer. Either opt for vibrant and contrasting hues or thicker stripes. Exhibit A: Ananya in this breezy skirt set by label Raisa that screams summer; and Exhibit B: this black and yellow, flared pant set by Two Point Two worn by Kareena Kapoor Khan.   

If you are a li’l sceptical about going all the way, then try and include stripes in sections, as seen in the Ōshadi overlay on Ananya Panday. Or just keep one piece in the ensemble stripped as seen on Mrunal Thakur, who is wearing Hellessy from top to bottom and scores extra points for the corset belt, and Kareena looking her glamorous self in her Zimmermann apparel. But the key is to select cheery, bright colours like tangerine and red and balance them out other equally eye-catching hues.   

Continuing her tradition of dishing out stellar vacay looks, Priyank Chopra Jonas is her confident and stylish self in this striped, tie-up halter set in multiple colours. We absolutely love the high-slit detail and the blast of hues in varying stripes.

This tube bikini set on Sara Ali Khan by eco-conscious, swimwear brand Flirtatious makes a strong case for how you can incorporate stripes into your beach- and resort-wear. The fun colours and chunky stripes certainly make a set like this apt for lounging around the pool or by the sea. Pro tip: Accessorise with only one statement piece, like chunky hoops of a neckpiece to avoid looking over the top.

Use a striped shirt is a dress as done by Simone Ashley or an overlay as seen on Pooja Hedge over your swimwear. A reminder: you don’t have to stick to boring black or navy stripes, pick any hue from the rainbow or (all if you wish) and use their striped iteration in your ensemble.   

Switch your regular, mundane pantsuits with colourful stripes. Just like Deepika Padukone, try one in a cool shade of blue and complement it with heels in a contrasting colour to make heads turn. Or choose a candy stripped, denim co-ord set by Wrangler like Alia for a fun airport look and keep it casual and simple with a pair of sunnies and a tote bag to add some chic.
