ICYMI: These Celebrities Are Bending the Rules in Fashion

The lines between ‘womenswear’ and ‘menswear’ are getting hazier by the day. Androgynous and gender-fluid fashion is taking over like a storm and it’s more than a trend. It’s about unconventional outfits and dressing in a way that feels true to you.

We’ve scoured through the internet and pulled out 5 of the most stunning gender-bender looks celebrities have pulled off this year. From Lilly Singh’s sherwani look and Brad Pitt’s skirt to Zendaya’s power suit, here’s all the inspiration you need to introduce your wardrobe to some non-conforming, gender-neutral looks.

Lilly Singh

The multi-hyphenate Lilly Singh is no stranger to nonconformity. She has often opted for tailor-made sherwanis before. This time, Lilly gave us a whole different perspective on wedding wear. Going beyond conventional sarees and lehengas, Lilly picked a black embroidered sherwani from the house of Falguni Shane Peacock. She paired her sherwani with a traditional necklace that had aqua-coloured gemstones, chunky shoes and a blue-hued kohl-rimmed eye that added drama to the look. Lilly completed the look with a comet buster bindi and a sleek ponytail. Is this the beginning of an androgynous wedding fashion trend? Here’s hoping!

Brad Pitt skirt

Brad Pitt

A few months ago, Brad Pitt gave us a sartorial moment we didn’t know we were waiting for. While in Europe for the promotions of his movie Bullet Train, Brad wore a ragged knee-length skirt, a muddy-brown linen jacket, and a dirty pink button-down shirt. He paired this look with Stylmartin motorcycle boots and a gold chain. This androgynous moment had us swooning!

Zendaya

There is nothing, literally nothing that Zendaya can’t pull off. Her style evolution has been one for the ages. And one of the reasons that it stands out as much as it does is because she isn’t afraid to experiment and change things up once in a while. For instance, back in March Zendaya opted for an elegant double-breasted Sportmax suit to wear to the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party. The suit featured a form-fitting jacket with slightly broader shoulders and a pair of flared trousers with a mauve shirt inside.

To amp up the androgyny silhouettes, Zendaya wore a leather tie, a sparkling leaf-motif broach and knuckle duster rings from Bulgari. If this isn’t gender-fluid fashion done right, we don’t know what is.

Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh’s love for gender-bender clothing is infamous. From flowy skirts to quirky prints, he isn’t one to shy away. He recently proved this with the outfit he wore in the first episode of Koffee with Karan season 7. Embracing his maximalist vibe, Ranveer opted for a Dior pantsuit that featured big star motifs all over. He broke the monochromatic effect with a vibrant red shirt underneath. It truly was a star-studded night!

Billy Porter

Let’s face it, we can’t write about fashion that blurs gender lines without mentioning LGBTQ icon, Billy Porter. While he has done wonders for the fluid fashion movement on more occasions than we can count, the outfit that he wore to the opening night of the 2022 Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ+ Film Festival has stayed with us. Billy chose a neon pink pantsuit with golden buttons and no shirt inside. He amped the outfit up by accessorizing with a long golden necklace that featured suns of descending sizes, golden platform heals, metallic blue eyeshadow and a see-through pink clutch. Somehow, this look has an aura of simplicity while still being as pretty OTT!
