Low-rise bootcut jeans are back, and honestly, we kind of missed them

If there’s one denim trend that knows how to divide a room, it’s low-rise jeans. In the early 2000s, the lower the waistband, the better. Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and Christina Aguilera were among the poster girls of the era, making low-slung denim feel like an essential part of the Y2K wardrobe.

Bootcut jeans skimmed the hips and flared slightly at the hem, showing up everywhere from music videos to red carpets. Add a tiny shirt, oversized sunglasses, and a few rhinestones, and you had the decade’s unofficial uniform. It was very 2003, very celebrity-off-duty, and very much everywhere.

And then, naturally, we decided we hated it.

After years of high-rise denim, where jeans sat as far away from our hip bones as possible, low-rise became one of those trends we were more than happy to leave in the 2000s. So, naturally, it’s making its way back into our wardrobes, and yes, we have questions. But this time, the silhouette feels a little less “straight out of a 2000s music video” and a little more 2026.

There’s also more to the low-rise comeback than nostalgia. The style was closely tied to the era’s very particular body standards, which made the idea of squeezing back into those unforgiving jeans feel less like a fun fashion throwback and more like a threat. After years of conversations around body diversity and dressing for your own comfort, are we really ready to go back?

Well, sort of. Low-rise denim is back, but the way we’re wearing it has changed.

The Y2K renaissance has revived plenty of things we once swore were better left in the past. Tiny bags? Back. Baby tees? Back. Bootcut jeans? Somehow, also back. But the 2026 version doesn’t require us to recreate a Britney Spears music video from head to toe. Low-rise denim has been quietly making its way back into wardrobes, only this time, the silhouette feels more relaxed, polished, and, dare we say, wearable.

And that’s where low-rise bootcut jeans come in.

With their low waist, slim fit through the hips and thighs, and subtle flare from the knee down, they have all the nostalgia of the original without making you look like you’ve stepped straight out of a 2003 time capsule. Think trendy woman with great jeans, not a Y2K costume party.

So, are we ready to forgive low-rise? 

Maybe. 

The funny thing about fashion is that the trends we once swore we'd never touch again somehow become the ones we are most excited to see return. Low-rise bootcut jeans have had quite the journey, from Y2K uniform to fashion's most divisive silhouette, and now an unlikely comeback. 

The good news is that you don't have to recreate the entire 2000s aesthetic to get involved. A faded blue pair can lean into the nostalgia, a dark wash can keep things understated, while an embellished pair can do all the talking for you. 

After years of high-rise loyalty, we are not saying we are ready to give up our favourite jeans just yet. But perhaps low-rise bootcuts deserve a second chance. Fashion has convinced us of worse.
