Meditation Is Major RN—Here's Why It Should Be Your Next Passion

If you look up meditation on Instagram, more than 8.5 million posts pop up, giving tough competition to viral trends like #contouring or #lipstickmountain. In fact, there’s new  research rolling out almost every day highlighting the benefits of this brand of thought control—it reduces stress, helps you concentrate, slows down ageing, leads to a better sex life, makes you happier...the list is long! Celebrities like Madonna, Katy Perry, Nicole Kidman, Lady Gaga, among hundreds of others are fans of this yogic practice, while Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Bipasha Basu, and Tara Sharma, who’ve been vocal about how yoga and meditation have helped them immensely, make a strong case for it closer home.

Malini Ramani, designer, who started practicing kundalini yoga (that involves a lot of meditation), two years ago, says, “It helps me stay connected to my spirit. When I saw the results, I wanted the same for others, hence, I started teaching it as well.” While for Vasudha Kadian, an ex beauty editor and now a beauty blogger, meditation is a way of “finding answers to things that have been weighing on my mind”. Adds Amyra Dastur, actor, “Meditation has helped me find my centre and brings me peace.” Jia Singh, a wellness and beauty blogger, seconds that. “It immediately relaxes me,” she adds.

While meditation has been primarily associated with physical relaxation and a sense of peacefulness, a new study at Harvard claims that it can literally change your brain for the better. Sara Lazar, an Instructor of Psychology at the Harvard Medical School, who helmed the research, explains: “The study found that long-term meditators have an increased amount of grey matter in the insula and sensory regions. Basically, when you’re mindful, you’re paying attention to your breathing, to sounds, to the present moment experience, and shutting cognition down, leading to heightened senses.” Another study suggest that meditating daily can shrink the area of your brain that triggers the fight-or-flight complex.

The result: enhanced creativity, increased health benefits, and a generally glass-half-full way of considering life. If you’re not already doing it (or don’t know how to), there are thousands of apps at your disposal—making it easier than ever to learn about meditation and implement it in your daily life. All you need to do is download one that works for you and give it 20 minutes, every day!
