Turn your Balcony into an Outdoor Retreat

In the current times, when interaction with the outside world is limited, the balcony is the only space that connects you with the outdoors. It is here that you can get your daily dose of Vitamin D, relax and unwind or simply spend time with family. If you did not give this space much attention earlier, now is the right time to do so. Here are a few tips to spruce up the balcony and turn it into a vibrant and happy space.

1. Plan the space with enough comfortable seating such as loungers, bucket chairs, and deep seating to make the place look inviting for interaction. “Considering the complications in maintenance, it is suggested to use lightweight furniture in the outdoors,” says Pooja Ashley, co-founder of Ashleys, a Mumbai-based firm specialising in interiors and architectural designs. Don’t forget to add a small table that you can use for coffee or cocktails.

2. Bring in the outdoors by filling the space with plants. Get creative, use pots, unused crockery or baskets as planters. Next time, you declutter your kitchen, check what you can use as planters.

3. Lighting plays a vital role and can spell magic in the evenings. “Strategize lighting in a way to softly illuminate the floor and seating level,” suggests Ashley. You can also place candles and tea lights on the floor or low tables around the seating area.

4. Add pattern and texture to the floor by placing rugs or runners. Choose the ones that can weather the elements.

5. Camouflage the wall with contemporary screens, planters or water-resistant art. This is where you can add your personal touch, paint the walls in a bright, cheery colour or hang knick knacks from your living space to make the space look like an extension of your living room.

The next time you long to catch up with fresh air in the city’s most happening rooftop restaurants, you might want to reconsider your balcony at home.
