Yes, you heard that right. Leader Kim Jong Un has ordered that dogs in Pyongyang, Capital of North Korea, be rounded up and sacrificed to serve the nation amid food shortages.

A recent UN report stated that as many as 60 percent of North Korea's population is facing widespread food shortages that have been worsened by international sanctions imposed on the regime for its nuclear missile programmes. Thereby, along with an attempt to dismantle the concept of a 'Western decadence' that has been on the receiving end of much resentment, the nation's food shortage problem has also prompted this cruel turn of events.

As per law, ownership of a dog is prohibited in North Korea, denouncing 'a tainted trend of bourgeois ideology'. With the majority of the country's ordinary citizens owning pigs and other livestock, having a dog is considered to be elitist, perpetuating a 'decadence' and Western-influenced idea of luxury.

With the ban being issued in July, sources have stated, " Authorities have identified households with pet dogs and are forcing them to give them up or forcefully confiscating them and putting them down." While some of the dogs are being sent to state-run zoos, others are being sold to dog meat restaurants to suffice people in a nation struck by food shortage. Pet owners are dreading their fate and "cursing Kim Jong Un behind his back," (according to a source) but there's little they can do in their defence.

Amidst the moral crisis, Animal Rescue Groups across the globe, particularly in the US, are expending huge efforts to ban the dog-meat trade and rescue animals. However, with the global coronavirus pandemic imposing restrictions on travel, many welfare organisations have had to pause their efforts.
