You may have often heard that you are what you eat. Well, it might just be the thing that can get you closer to the skin of your dreams.
"New skin cells don’t grow from the latest skin cream, they grow from the food you eat. Diet is the foundation of great skin. Good skin starts with your diet. The skin may seem to be an external part of our body, but it is considered to be an organ by biologists. It is the largest organ of our body and performs various important functions. Keeping skin healthy doesn’t just happen from the outside but inside too. It is extremely important to focus on your diet if you wish for healthier and glowing skin," says dietitian Gauri Anand.
Here are her recommendations for the perfect diet for flawless skin:
1. Avoid refined and processed foods- One of the best ways to stay as healthy and beautiful as ever is to avoid eating refined or highly processed foods. Such type of foods can rob you of important nutrients that are needed by your body, also make your skin look dull. Though once in a blue moon you can eat anything you want to but learning how to eat for amazing skin is extremely very important.
2. Including vitamins- You need your daily dose of vitamins if you want healthy glowing skin. Vitamin A helps fight wrinkles and dark spots, Vitamin B hydrates, soothes and fights wrinkles and acne. Vitamin B1 helps convert food into energy and helps with nerve function. Vitamin C is considered a boon for the skin as it brightens the skin. Food rich in these vitamins are citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, broccoli, sprouts, eggs, cod liver oil, nuts and seeds, dairy products, green vegetables like kale, spinach, lettuce and romaine.
3. Avoid Sugar- Sugar is not so sweet for the skin. Studies have shown us time and again that sugar increases inflammation in the body as quickly as you can say chronic disease. It also causes a huge release in insulin, which triggers the production of androgen hormones, causing excess sebum oil production in the skin and increases pore size. This combination is perfect for a killer breakout. Sugar = Inflammation = Acne. Sugar damages your skin through a natural process called glycation. According to the British Journal of Dermatology, the visible effects of glycation tend to emerge for women around age 35. By this time, the accumulation of oxidative damage, hormonal changes and AGE development compound. Your skin, unable to counteract the oxidative damage done with sufficient collagen and elastin synthesis, begins to show wear and tear.
4. Adequate water intake- Drinking water has the ability to flush your system of toxins. This cleanse keeps your skin clean, pushing out bacteria and reducing the risk of acne and other skin problems. If your skin is oily, then your pores will clog up, eventually leading to acne breakouts. When you drink enough water, the cells in every part of your body get hydrated through the blood. The skin, being the largest organ in the body, also gets hydrated, even as the impurities and toxins get flushed out at the cellular level. Water prevents your body from heating up and normalises your body temperature. When your body heats up due to the weather or physical activity, drinking lots of water ensures that you don’t develop heat boils and rashes on your skin. Coconut water can do wonders for your skin.
5. Consume beetroot- This vegetable helps to liven up your skin tone by increasing the amount of oxygen in your bloodstream. They also help to repair skin cells and fight pimples and premature ageing. What’s more? Beetroot also doubles up as an all-natural lip-stain.
6. Healthy vegetable Consumption- Vegetables such as Spinach, these lovely leaves have all the nutrients you need for glowing skin. They also have Vitamin A and Vitamin C to improve your skin clarity. Go for baby spinach that is younger rather than larger matured leaves.
