Christmas holds a special place in our hearts. And thanks to Marvel, fans of all things in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) got an early gift this week in the form of Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. With the trailer giving us much more than a glimpse into what’s in store, I certainly wasn’t disappointed watching my favourite guardians save the day once again making it a very special Christmas for Peter Quill (Chris Pratt).
It all starts with Kraglin telling the Guardians a story about how Yondu (Michael Rooker) ruined Christmas for Quill back in the day when he was a boy. That’s when Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Drax (Dave Bautista) decide to take matters into their own hands and give their friend a present that makes him remember Christmas for all the right reasons. And they don’t just take matters into their hands, but the American actor Kevin Bacon. Eight years after we were teased in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Bacon is finally a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Drax and Mantis are the ones who carry this short film, of 40 minutes, on their shoulders and they have an adorable chemistry that brings a smile to your face in no time. Watching them walk down the streets of Los Angeles, click an innumerable amount of selfies with fans, and then hunt for Bacon in Beverly Hills make for the best parts. That’s not all, the soundtrack is filled with Christmas bangers that include The Pogues, Julian Casablancas, Smashing Pumpkins, Hanoi Rocks, Low, Little Jackie, and The Old 97s, Kevin Bacon's band.
Long story short, Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is silly with all the laughs and gags and is yet so very special because it brings out the spirit of Christmas and has our characters look their goofy, and genuine best. Just as we love it.
