10 Best Dance Movies to Watch on International Dance Day

A determined Jennifer Lawrence giving dance lessons to a devilishly good looking Bardley Cooper, who supposedly has two left feet in the movie Silver Linings Playbook, let’s agree is one of our best movie memories. Dance movies have their own ways of sparking joy. Be it the kindling romance between the lead pairs as they waltz looking at each other or the drama that ensues from teams competing at dance shows, feuds between rivals, bone breaking hard work, petty politics, heartbreak… Each movie comes with a heavy dose of entertainment. On International Dance Day, we put together a list of some classic dance movies that you can watch now. Yes, you are allowed to dance along! 

Saturday Night Fever 
Watch it for the love of John Travolta and disco. All the right moves, music and Travolta’s OTT outfits…what more can you ask for? One of the greatest dance movies ever, Saturday Night Fever will make you fall in love with disco!

Flashdance 
Termed as one of the best dance movies, Hollywood ever made, the plot revolves around Alex Owens, a factory worker who doubles up as a dancer at a night club. Owens dreams of becoming a full-time professional dancer. Her journey fraught with hardships gives up hope and plenty of scintillating dance moves.

Dirty Dancing 
The movie had all the trappings of a classic hit. A pretty teenaged girl, a suave dance instructor, a scenic location and a disapproving wealthy family. The romantic saga of Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), the dance instructor at an uppity resort and Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey), the girl holidaying at the resort has some memorable dance sequences that you can practice with bae. 

Footloose 
The movie is set in a town where dancing isn’t allowed. The uber charming Kevin bacon is all out to overturn the ban on dancing and wins hearts in the process. A heartwarming movie that will inspire you to google up for dance classes around you. 

Center Stage 
One of the most amazing dance movies, Centre Stage has all the ingredients of a gripping drama— romance, sex and back-stabbing. What will stay with you is definitely the iconic finale sequence that has inspired choreographers across the world. Watch it and get moving!

Chicago 
The movie starred Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renée Zellweger as the iconic Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart. A musical, crime-comedy drama, Chicago based on the Broadway musical of the same name is no less than a spectacle. There are some interesting costumes, epic dance moves and nail-biting moments. 

Honey 
One of Jessica Alba’s most appreciated movies, Honey sees the actor put up a convincing performance as a struggling choreographer. She dreams of becoming a music video choreographer while teaching hip-hop to kids.  Her first break comes through when she’s asked to be featured in a music video herself. 

Step Up 
The movie features some serious dancing.  Channing Tatum, who plays the lead, beautifully fuses ballet with hip hop that makes for an interesting watch. It is while filming this movie that Tatum also got to romance his wife Jenna Dewan, another reason for all you romantics out there to watch it. 

Shall We Dance 
This romantic comedy has Jennifer Lopez playing a ballroom dance instructor and Richard Gere playing a lawyer. A romance brews between the two when Lopez teaches Gere how to dance. A feel-good movie for those cold, lonely nights.

Black Swan 
The movie that got Natalie Portman an Oscars has plenty of dance moves. If you are a fan of ballet, this is for you. Mila Kunis, who plays a tough competitor to Portman puts in a brilliant performance too.
