Art In the Time of Isolation by Param Sahib

Param Sahib, the founder of the eponymous brand is a designer and graphic artist, who blends the two to create wearable art. As he puts it in his own words, “The idea behind my label is to put out happy and fun stories through the garments that would form an emotional attachment with the wearers”. His utterly Instagrammable clothes fuse seemingly discordant elements like loud colours, quirky prints and clashing textures to create conversation starters.

The artworks that Param creates are an extension of his eclectic and maximalist sensibilities. Most of his pieces centre around him and act as a visual mouthpiece for his thoughts. “I started making artworks a few years ago. It was my way of speaking out against the bullies at my college, work and even some people from my community. I was angry for being constantly harassed about my choices and the way I looked. I wanted to make sure, I vented out all my feelings in the most signature way,” he says.

Besides personal experience, inspiration for both his designs and art also comes from the world around him. For Cosmopolitan India’s Work From Home issue,
we asked him to interpret the current situation, in his signature style. In his artwork titled Roleplay, he shows the shift of power as nature takes control, forcing mankind indoors. As we wait it out in our cages, nature recovers and breathes. “The artwork also shows my love for animals and their right to co-exist freely,” says Param.
