Charlie Chaplin, one of the greatest actors of the silent era was born Charles Spencer Chaplin in London in 1889. A childhood fraught with hardships didn’t stop him from becoming Hollywood’s foremost comedy star, he is also among the few actors who moved from silent to talking pictures seamlessly. The Gold Rush
The movies that was released in 1925 remains till date one of Chaplin’s most memorable films. The story revolves around the Tramp as he takes part in the Klondike Gold Rush. He goes through a series of hilarious mishaps in the process. In 1942, the movie was re-released by Chaplin with a new score and narration. The score was so well received that it earned the film an Academy Award nomination for sound design.

The movie that was directed by Chaplin was a huge hit. Chaplin’s Tramp character adopts an abandoned child, who grows to become his young partner in swindling. This movie, a satire on Adolf Hitler’s rise to power had Chaplin playing the dictator. The noted similarity between him and Hitler’s moustache, and his superb acting prowess saw Chaplin pull off a convincing role. The film ended with a lengthy polemic, where Chaplin addresses the audience. Till date its considered to be one of his finest performances.

This is a film about Chaplin and not by him. But it gives you a perspective into his life and works. This stylized biopic by director Richard Attenborough, takes a few dramatic liberties but makes for an interesting watch. Robert Downey Jr, who plays Chaplin gives one of his best performances. Little surprise that the movie earned the actor an Oscar nomination.
