As we adapt to the new normal, courtesy of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, stress levels are at an all-time high. So, if you are noticing sudden red bumps or breakouts on your body, you can blame Cortisol, the stress hormone.
Your chest, back, shoulders, upper arms and even buttocks, are some of the areas where you may notice an upsurge of acne attack. Stress-induced inflammation, clogged pores, excess sebum production and fluctuating hormones can all make the situation worse, especially if you are prone to acne.
What causes body acne?
Cosmetic Surgeon Dr Geeta Grewal, 9Muses Wellness Clinic, Gurugram says, "Acne breakouts on the body can be caused due to a variety of reasons. It is important to know the cause to treat this condition. Usually, body acne is caused when excessive sebum on your skin and dead skin cells clog your pores. This becomes the breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria and leads to an inflammatory response of the skin causing pustules and bumps."
She adds that hormonal imbalances or conditions such as PCOD can also cause pimples.
How can you get rid of body acne?
Once you have figured the cause behind your body breakouts, you can get down to treating these persistent pimples that are also prone to scarring if left untreated. Dr Grewal suggests the following measures:
Wash, wash, wash
Sweat and moisture create a breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria. So, make sure to shower regularly and use a loofah to exfoliate dead skin cells, especially after a workout. Opt for a body wash that contains salicylic acid, glycolic acid or lactic acid. These acids prevent dead skin cells from building up and blocking your pores.
While washing your hair...
Your shampoo and conditioners can leave residue on your back when you wash them out. These can clog pores and cause back acne. So, once you are done washing your hair, make sure to rinse your back to remove the residue.
Scrub
Opt for a pre-shower body scrub if you are getting lots of under the skin spots or blackheads. One always needs to be gentle and should not rub the skin raw as this can increase inflammation.
Moisturise
Choosing the right body moisturizer is also essential. Applying a moisturiser will soothe and repair your skin barrier, but make sure that any products you leave on your skin are labelled as non-comedogenic so that they will not clog your pores. If possible, avoid using body oils. Some oil-based products can cause acne. Instead, switch to lighter creams that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and glycolic acid.
Don't pop pimples
Be very gentle with your acne. Don’t pick, squeeze or scratch your spots. This can introduce infection and lead to scarring. Sometimes it can also lead to pigmentation, which is stubborn to get rid of.
Change clothes often
If you are prone to excessive sweating, you can also carry spare clothes because excessive sweat and bacteria can lead to blocked pores. Wear loose-fitting clothes as you don’t want to irritate sensitive and inflamed skin.
Dr Grewal adds that if you’ve tried all of these things and are still struggling to get on top of your breakouts or are aware of developing scars, consult a doctor to begin treatment.
