The idea of eating a four-decade slice of cake is not enticing, but this one’s not an ordinary slice. A piece of cake from the royal wedding of the late Princess Diana and Prince Charles was put up for sale. The slice weighing 28-ounce was bought by an online bidder in Leeds, England named Gerry Layton.

As per a report by BBC, “ Layton says he's already stipulated in his will that the cake must go to charity after his death, along with the rest of his estate—though he did quip, I will have to think of a way to stop myself from trying to eat it though."

Dominic Winter Auctioneers' Chris Albury was surprised by the number of bidders who were keen on getting their hands on the slice and shared that most inquiries for the same came from the UK, Middle East and US.

The slice of cake made with a Marzipan base apparently measured eight inches by seven inches and was preserved for the longest time in a plastic wrap. The slice—highly decorated featured a royal coat of arms in gold, blue, and red. The slice was a part of the fruit cake served at their reception. As per People, “The tiered centrepiece cake they served stood 5 feet tall and weighed 225 pounds.”

Charles and Diana got married in 1981 and split 11 years later. She died in a car crash in 1997.
