With a portfolio of work spanning editorial, print, TV and celebrity styling, Ami Patel has the knack of transforming people to help them present their most fashionable selves to the world. So, it was only natural that when online fashion store Myntra Insider (tiered benefits program) launched their online fashion masterclasses, Ami was one of the 10 top celebrity stylists of the country they signed up with (along with Tanya Ghavri, Esha Amin, Sanjay Kumar, Mohit Rai, Aastha Sharma, and Amandeep Kaur).

If you are wondering what the Myntra Insider program is, we have got all the deets. This program is built for rewarding Myntra’s customers as they engage and spend more time with Myntra. Customers get points for shopping on Myntra and engaging on the platform, which can then be redeemed for a host of benefits including fashion advice from top celeb stylists, extra savings on purchases, and VIP access to Myntra sale events and new launches, to name a few.  As an added plus, each of these stylists will be conducting Masterclasses on various themes (wedding time fashion, party fashion, street fashion, retro wear, etc.). Users can redeem their points to view these classes, and they also have the option of asking questions and getting responses from a team of stylists. These stylists will also put together their look recommendations for various occasions in the form of curated product collections. To know more, watch the video below.

When it comes to fashion, Ami Patel is quite a definitive authority. One of India’s top celebrity stylists, all you need to do is click on her Instagram handle (@stylebyami) and Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, Ananya Pandey, and Kangana Ranaut will confirm her style-prowess as they strike a pose showcasing her fashionable sartorial choices.

As we prepped to take notes from Ami’s Masterclass we caught up with Ami herself and asked her some of our top fashion and styling questions to get her sartorial inputs, straight from the (fashion) horse’s mouth!

Team Cosmo: What does style mean to you?

Ami Patel: To me, style is an expression of fashion and an expression of a person's personality.

TC: Tell us a few style trends to look out for in 2020.

Ami: I think sustainability and sustainable fashion will grow even bigger, and that's a trend we are going to see in all areas of our lives. The focus will be on how can we repurpose, upcycle, and promote mindful purchasing, in other words - sustainability. The use of biodegradable materials and waterless production will grow even bigger. Another trend that will be seen is that of wearing handcrafted, crocheted pieces. An emphasis will be placed on statement necklines and sleeve shapes (puff- sleeves majorly). Bold colors, monochromatic looks, and bigger, bolder florals will be big trends in 2020. A reinvention of the white shirt and edgy suits will also be spotted.

TC: According to you, what is an accessory that can instantly upgrade your look?

Ami: It's your smile :)

TC: How can you make an outfit more stylish in just 5 minutes?

Ami:  I would like to say that anything you wear can be made more stylish, it depends on how you carry yourself and the way you wear it. Rather than adding accessories or any other items of clothing, or removing anything, focus on the invisible factors like self-confidence, the way you carry yourself, and your personality.

TC: Give us some pointers to get the perfect picture for Instagram.

Ami: To get the perfect picture for Instagram, hold your phone at a slightly lower level, and tilt it a little bit away from you to create length. Make sure you have some fun with filters as well!

TC: How can you update and style:

 Jeans and a tee.

Ami: For updating a jeans and a tee, don a pair of strappy sandals and wrap them around the bottom of your jeans. That’s a completely updated look. Wear it with a fitted, slogan, and cropped-tee.

 A little black dress.

Ami: I would take a little black dress and wear lace cycling shorts underneath so that they peep out a little bit, and that makes the whole look cooler.

A Sweatshirt and track-pants.

Ami: Slip on a coordinated sweatshirt and track-pants, and cinch in the waist with a waist pouch bag.

TC: What made you take interest in this collaboration with Myntra?

Ami: For me, teaching is an extension of my personality and hence, the idea of sharing what I know with people is what really got me interested in this collaboration with Myntra.

TC: What can we expect from the Masterclass? Who do you think should be enrolling for it?

Ami: I think what you can expect from this Masterclass are tips and tricks to update your personal style. I would say everyone should enroll. The class will touch upon relatable topics, things that you really should know. Furthermore, it’s expert advice that is available to you at your fingertips! Really, anyone who wants to look good or make the right impression, and anybody who’s remotely interested in fashion should enroll. The class has got so much exhaustive information and knowledge, and it’s coming from the years of experience of the stylists involved. Hence, according to me its invaluable lessons being made available to people, which is really a great idea that Myntra Insider has come up with. You will get the cream of styling tips and the best of the best when it comes to styling from this Masterclass. You will get the experience and the expertise of many top stylists, of all their accumulated work of many years, and the opportunity to learn from their collective talent.

TC: How does it feel to be associated with such a good panel of fellow celebrity stylists?

Ami: It definitely feels great! Honestly, I know everyone on the panel, we’ve crossed paths, we’ve interacted and we’ve even worked together at some point or the other. So this feels like being featured with friends, which seems like a great idea to me.

TC: Given that your Masterclass is about retro dressing, how is this (retro dressing) relevant to a person’s daily style? Have you shared any secrets on the show?

Ami: Retro dressing is relevant to everyone, as about 90% of the fashion trends that are in vogue right now are actually inspired from the past. It’s quite nice to know what the trends were, and how we can make them relevant today. To know my secret, you should watch the show!

TC: Can you tell us the most fun/memorable moment of your career?

Ami: The most fun and memorable moment of my career goes back to when we had fittings with Priyanka for a particular red carpet that she had to attend. We came across a dress that had a hoodie. Wearing a hoodie-dress on the red carpet was something different. Actually, nobody had ever done it, so we thought that we should just go for it. In the end, fashion is all about having fun, so we went with the flow. Priyanka also wore these amazing red stilettos with the hoodie-dress. We were so glad to hear all the positive response we got for that look.

TC: Can you tell us the major colour trends for fall-winter 2019-20.

Ami: I’ve been loving the fall-winter color palette. Hues and shades of red like merlot, chili, pepper, summer, fig, cranberry, crab apple, and peach-pink are some go-to colors that have also been seen during fashion weeks. The trend also includes colors like sugar-almond, Paloma, galaxy-blue, and their hues. Basically, one can look forward to bright hues and shades this season.

TC: Name 3 fashion faux-pas one must avoid at any cost.

Ami: The number one fashion faux-pas one must avoid is when the underwear lines can be seen through clothes. One must invest in seamless underwear and prefer wearing seamless underwear when wearing a tight dress or pants. The second faux-pas for me is being overdressed. Being a little underdressed is fine by me, but being overdressed is a big no. Too many logos is the third fashion faux-pas for me. Therefore, having multiple logos on bags, belts, shoes clothes, etc. makes them stand out for all the wrong reasons. So, one must avoid mixing up logos and let there be just one logo at a time.
