If you thought your Verity obsession could not get any more intense, think again. The first teaser for the film adaptation of American author Colleen Hoover's novel has officially dropped, and it is already giving eerie, chaotic, what's-happening energy. Starring Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, and Josh Hartnett, the psychological thriller has just the right amount of romance and madness to keep audiences hooked until the very end.

The teaser gives us the audience a first look at the twisted love triangle and the deeply unsettling world of the Crawfords. There is a mysterious house, a silent wife who may not be so silent, and a manuscript that might be more confession than fiction (or not). Basically, if you loved the book, prepare to spiral all over again.

The plot is as unhinged as you remember

While those who have read the book already know, here's a quick outline for those who will directly watch the movie. At the heart of Verity is Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who is hired as a ghostwriter to complete a bestselling series after star author Verity Crawford is left in a comatose state following an accident. Sounds simple enough until Ashleigh moves into the Crawford home and discovers a manuscript that reveals disturbing secrets about Verity’s life and marriage.

The teaser leans into this very tension: dimly lit hallways, unsettling glances, and that constant feeling that something is very off. It also hints at the blurred lines between truth and fiction, which is exactly what made the book such a viral hit.

Anne Hathaway in her villain era

The biggest takeaway from the teaser is that Anne Hathaway is not here to play nice. The teaser shows her as the chilling Verity, who is in her bed one moment and out there to haunt (and kiss) Dakota Johnson the next. There are glimpses of her both before and after the accident, and the contrast is unsettling, to say the least.

At one point, the teaser flips a romantic, rather raunchy moment into something straight-up sinister, and if you are excited to watch the movie in theatres, know that the story is not about safe love. It is about obsession, control and disturbing mind games.

The tension between Lowen and Jeremy

Well, if you've read the book, you already know this. Without dropping much spoilers, let's just say that the dynamic between Ashleigh and Jeremy is complicated, intense and very morally questionable. The teaser shows flashes of attraction, intimacy and confusion, and believe us, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

With Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett leading this equation, expect chemistry that feels equal parts sexy and dangerous.

Book lovers are in a frenzy

Love it, hate it, but you cannot ignore the fact that the Colleen Hoover thriller has been BookTok's favourite over the years. The novel blew up online for its sexual descriptions, shocking twists, and the infamous, controversial ending, and, going by the teaser, the film seems to be staying true to that chaos.

While the teaser only revealed the disturbing dynamic between Ashleigh and Verity, fans are excited to see how the film will handle the manuscript storyline, which is basically the core of the book’s madness.

Directed by Michael Showalter, Verity is set to hit theatres on October 2, 2026.
