The 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' trailer dropped and suddenly I am 12 again

The internet has been collectively losing its mind ever since the first full trailer for HBO's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone dropped. Within minutes, my social media was filled with screenshots of the Great Hall, Quidditch, the Sorting Hat, Harry stroking Hedwig, and people admitting they had already watched the trailer "just one more time" at least five times (including myself). The new series arrives this Christmas with an entirely new cast and a promise to adapt the books with much more detail than the films ever could. And somehow, that's all it took to unlock this very specific feeling.

I wasn't expecting to get emotional over a trailer. I thought I'd watch it, compare a few scenes to the original films, and the books, of course, have an opinion on the casting, and move on. Instead, somewhere between Harry stepping into Hogwarts for the first time and the glimpse of the Mirror of Erised, I realised I wasn't watching as an adult anymore. For those two minutes, I was 12 again, sitting cross-legged in front of the TV, convinced my Hogwarts letter had simply been delayed.

Hogwarts was never just a castle

The biggest surprise about this trailer isn't that Hogwarts looks beautiful. Of course it does. It's that it remembers Hogwarts was just another magic school before it became a battlefield.

The trailer lingers on tiny moments that I, a self-proclaimed avid Potterhead, instantly recognised from the books: students walking through the corridors in oversized robes, Harry nervously sitting under the crumpled Sorting Hat, Ron with dirt on his nose and ketchup on his Hogwarts letter, the snowy castle grounds, and obviously Hermione wondering if the boys "ever read". There are classrooms, greenhouses, library scenes, Harry and Ron's poor marksheets, and of course, Snape being mean; that's straight out of the books. The makers have already said the series wants to bring the smaller moments of Harry's first year to screen, and you can feel that intention in almost every shot.

And maybe that's probably why it feels so nostalgic. Growing up, Harry Potter wasn't just about defeating Voldemort. It was about wondering what subject you'd be best at, imagining which house you'd belong in, and wishing your school staircase would occasionally move just to make life interesting and easier. The books spent pages on ordinary magical days, and those ordinary days became magical for us in more ways than one. And watching the trailer of the upcoming Harry Potter series feels like being invited back into that world instead of simply revisiting it.

I grew up but never grew out of the Wizarding World

There's something strangely comforting about returning to Harry Potter in your twenties. My life today is full of rent, deadlines, unread emails, and trying to figure out what I am doing next. And then this trailer appeared with Harry stepping into Hogwarts for the first time, and suddenly none of those "grown-up things" mattered for a couple of minutes.

The new cast helps with that feeling too. Dominic McLaughlin's Harry, Arabella Stanton's Hermione, and Alastair Stout's Ron don't feel like they are trying to replace the trio we grew up with, but I am very much ready to accept them as the new kids on the block. They feel like children discovering Hogwarts for the first time, which is exactly how these characters are supposed to feel. The trailer also gives us glimpses of John Lithgow's Dumbledore, Janet McTeer's McGonagall, Nick Frost's Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu's Snape, while still keeping the focus firmly on Harry's first year at Hogwarts.

Maybe this trailer hits so hard because it isn't asking us to leave our memories of the OG Harry Potter behind. The films will always belong to one generation, my generation. But this series seems to be saying there's still room to fall in love with Hogwarts all over again, and I think I am ready for it.

Maybe that's the real magic here. Not just the spells, the moving chess board pieces, the troll in the dungeon, not even Quidditch. It's the reminder that somewhere inside every grown-up Harry Potter fan is a kid who still pauses whenever they see Platform 9¾, still wonders what wand they would choose and what wand would choose them, and still hasn't completely given up hope that an owl might show up one day with their letter.

Turns out that kid was only ever one trailer away.
