Women are told to make their desires small. So, what happens when you share them with strangers on Reddit?

Underneath that one, there’s a doctor seeking a ‘patient’ — sex on an actual treatment table (in an actual hospital) comes included. I haven’t been on this forum for long, but I’ve seen a lot. I’m now well-versed in the full breadth of penis-related acronyms. You might even call me an expert.

Men soliciting for sex is hardly new. But scroll a bit further, and there’s an American “blonde bombshell” looking for a handsome man who must be hung. There’s the “depraved slut” who wants to be “degraded and controlled”. There’s even the “pale sub” who wants you to watch her “sizzle in the sun”. “Have you ever wanted to own your own pet lobster?” she writes.

This is the burgeoning world of Reddit’s sexual fantasy forums. For the uninitiated, Reddit is an online platform built around anonymous communities (subreddits) dedicated to every conceivable interest. Those horny and looking for a hook-up are flocking to subreddits such as r/londonersr4r (‘r4r’ stands for ‘Redditor for Redditor’), where they’ll anonymously post exactly what they’re after in the bedroom — often in painstaking detail. And while r/londonersr4r describes itself as “for all types of connection: platonic, sexual, or romantic”, spend a bit of time on the forum and you’d be inclined to think those using it are mostly after the sexual stuff. Unless I missed all the people looking for a tennis partner…

r/GBr4r sees 15.2k visitors per week, and while the majority of posters are in London, there’s a wide range, such as the Dundee-based “Scottish alt gal” who’s in “desperate need of a big boy who can keep up with my sex drive”. When it comes to city-specific chats, r/londonersr4r is the biggest at 7.9k weekly visitors, but the list goes on: r/bristolNSFW2 (4k); r/brumhookup (3.4k); r/EssexUKhookups (3.4k). All the forums coming out of Manchester have been banned.

If geography isn’t your filter of choice, you might head to the kink-specific forums. They’re quite self-explanatory. Into pegging? Off you pop to r/PeggingUK (1.4k). Spanking? r/Spanking_Personals (3.3k). BDSM-inclined? r/BDSMPersonalsUK (77.4k). Left with the feeling that the regular r4r forums aren’t dirty enough? r/dirtyr4r (150k) awaits. So, what’s driving this demand? And what’s in it for the women? I delved a little deeper to see whether female fantasies have really found a new outlet.

Down the rabbit hole

It’s Monday and a rare sunny day in London. I’m sitting in a coffee shop in Hackney, hunched over my laptop. ‘Melons at Tesco,’ reads the title of the post. I glance over my shoulder, then click the NSFW button. There they are: two large breasts, their owner parked up outside the supermarket chain. I’m on r/GonewildGBUK, which calls itself a “place for open-minded women and couples to show off their nude bodies for fun”. I scroll down further. “My Yorkshire pussy isn’t going to eat itself,” reads another post. I’m not sure how I got here, and I’m not sure whether I like it, but I do think I should probably leave the cafe at this point. Now is probably a good time to admit I have entered this as something of a prude. I’ve dabbled with apps such as Feeld (a sex-positive dating app for the kink-curious) and I’ve certainly had my fair share of sexual adventures. I once spent a year trying to shag famous people, which I chronicled for this very magazine. Still, this world was something new entirely. There’s a relentless level of detail, honesty, and escalating filth on the r4r forums that is refreshing, but often makes you gawp.

The thing that unites the range of female fantasies on display isn’t the content; it’s the specificity and unfiltered candour. People can express what they truly desire, with posts often containing paragraphs on what they’re looking for. It’s a far cry from the apps. “People are being turned off by curated profiles and algorithm-driven matches that feel a bit fake,” says Annabelle Knight, Lovehoney’s sex and relationship expert. “Forums allow for more direct, intention-led communication.” Essentially: this is a sanctuary for sexual exploration, and it’s one that’s rooted in realism. “Without a profile tied to your real-life persona, there’s more freedom to experiment with fantasies that might not align with how you’re perceived IRL,” explains Knight.

It might not sound revolutionary, but also, it kind of is. Historically, women have been scrubbed from the narrative when it comes to sexual desire. Not only is there no real space for us to explore our fantasies, but when we do, we’re conditioned to feel guilt and shame. The reality is, if you’re a woman who wants to fuck, you’re signing yourself up to being called a slut. Dating app culture doesn’t help, either. The fear of being judged and shamed has made open, exploratory conversations about sex feel almost impossible. As psychosexual therapist Lucy Frank puts it, women often feel “overexposed and underseen” when it comes to their romantic and sexual lives. There’s also the matter of aesthetics: there’s a narrative in mainstream media and pop culture that you have to look a certain way to have ‘good’ sex. Stack it all up and the anonymity and freedom of these forums feels almost utopian.

What women want

“I’m so horny again today, it’s the third day in a row of feeling absolutely desperate,” reads the concluding line of one post. It’s titled ‘pulling panties to the side is so much hotter’. Some are after something more fleeting. ‘Touch me up at Qaterloo [sic] Station or nearby,’ is the title of another. She’s looking for someone that’s “good with [their] hands”. “Former piano and guitar player,” reads one of the replies. This is women taking control of their pleasure. None of it is passive. Even if they want it rough, or to be dominated, they chose that. It sits in contrast to the sexuality women are traditionally sold: somewhat performative and often framed by monogamy. “Culturally, there is still a taboo about understanding and owning our own sexuality,” explains psychosexual therapist Catherine Hood. “It’s only permitted to be looked at in the presence of another partner. But we all have a sexuality which is personal, private, and very important.”

It’s not just Reddit, either. There’s a broader shift in how women interact with sexual content. The boom in (smutty) romantasy, for instance. Books such as A Court Of Thorns And Roses have made explicitly sexual, female-led fantasy not just acceptable, but mainstream. These forums feel like the logical next step: not just consuming sexual fantasies, but authoring them. But what about IRL? How many of these fantasies end up as real encounters? That was harder to glean. The small number of women posting on r/londonersr4r weren’t that keen to chew the fat. There was Lucy*, though. She’d had a lot of them.

Lucy had begun posting on Reddit and another sex-specific online forum as a way to explore her desires outside of a sexless marriage. “The minute you tell someone you’re married and you don’t want a relationship, it’s like catnip,” she tells me.

At one point, Lucy had over 1,000 unread messages. That might sound like a whole load of admin, but for Lucy it was kind of the point. “My desire was being desired,” she tells me. “I like the excitement. I like the fear. I like the anonymity. I like the thrill.”

Over 18 months, Lucy cycled through 11 men. There was the ex-con she met in a hotel. There was the guy she met in her local park, her dog in tow. He simply bent her over and pushed her Marks & Spencer knickers to the side. There was the one she later found out knew her husband — not ideal. She’s since documented all of it on an anonymous Substack (@cumquats). It’s unflinching, to say the least. Reading it, it’s all so matter-of-fact that you struggle to discern how she feels about what’s happening. Arguably, she might not have known herself. While the experiences were ostensibly about her desires, they also distinctly weren’t. They might have got her to the park or the hotel room, but the sex itself? That was for him. “My pleasure was pretty much not important,” she tells me. “If they were trying to make me cum, I think it was to tick off an achievement in their own mind. It wasn’t actually about giving me pleasure.”

Would Lucy recommend the forums? Kind of. With a rather large caveat, at least. “Imagine you’re stood in a bar completely naked,” she explains of how exposing her experiences were and how men treated her — as if she was simply theirs for the taking. But, despite that, she says: “It was fun, and it taught me about myself and my desires.”

Another woman I spoke to from r/londonersr4r told me her interactions had been “98% good”. “Nothing super weird,” she added. Whatever you’re after, Annabelle Knight advises caution. “I wouldn’t recommend meeting someone directly from an anonymous forum without exchanging further details first,” she says. “If you are looking to meet someone, do so first of all in a public place.”

It might seem like obvious advice, but it’s needed. On one forum, someone with the handle LondonBedBreaker is “looking for a screamer”. He wants you to be “completely helpless and loving every brutal second of it”. When I peruse his profile, I see that he’s also been active in r/MisogynyFarm and r/traumatizedsluts2 — both of which have been banned. (Reddit has rules that prohibit inciting or glorifying violence, non-consensual intimate media, harassment, and hateful content, including misogyny.)

It wasn’t necessarily the sexual utopia I’d hoped for. From what I’d seen, posting to these forums as a woman led to one of two things: accusations of being a bot or getting inundated with pornographic messages. Often both. (When I contact Reddit for a comment, they tell me the platform “is a place for people to express their views and opinions on all topics in an environment where their privacy is protected”, but that “it’s essential that these conversations take place in a safe context”. They also say that there are “multiple teams and processes in place” to ensure this.) Still, it was time to throw caution to the wind and try it for myself. You only live once, after all.
