Should men get their dates an Uber?

The people of the internet are fighting again. This time, about if a man should or shouldn’t send an Uber to pick up a woman for their date.

It’s a question that’s been posed in (heterosexual) group chats and Reddit threads and Twitter posts for years now, but it’s recently hit the mainstream consciousness, especially as more hot takes on dating and relationships overtake social media. Case in point: In a recent viral screenshot, a girl asks her Hinge match to send her an Uber to get to the restaurant for their first date. The man responds that he won’t, but he would send her one after the date is over.

The exchange received many comments, with one user saying, “it’s very weird not to send a car”—and for her, an Uber Black, specifically. Naturally, damn near all hell broke loose, bringing out think pieces from almost every corner of the internet. And boy, are the people divided.

Please don't ask for Uber money to the initial dates if you're anything above 28. Or to be picked up. It's a total turn off. Get other cheaper means or get your priorities straight. You can't be 35 asking for Uber money, man. It smacks lunacy. And an egregious lack of…

Many think this likely applies to places like New York City, Los Angeles, or Chicago, but as this Esquire piece pointed out, if sending a date a car becomes a norm in these cities, it’s likely to become the case for smaller ones throughout the country, too.

I polled a few colleagues and some of us had this expectation for dates that go pretty late, others had been in situations where their date used the two-stop feature (so dropping her off first, then him last), and some were hesitant about giving their address to a new person.

So what’s the answer? Should a man absolutely have to get you an Uber to and from a date?
