Here's How to Avoid Skin Irritation From a Face Mask

As face masks become mandatory in many places to keep yourself and others safe against the unabated pandemic, it brings with it a slew of other problems. While discomfort is a minor issue in the larger scheme of things, the mask-wearers are often reporting skin issues such as acne, rashes and even allergic reactions.

"With the temperature going high and regular use of face masks to combat COVID'19, wearing a mask for longer hours means sweating underneath the mask that causes friction or irritation which may further lead to bacterial infections. Since the masks available in the market are made up of different materials, which contributes to developing rashes, pimples and other skin issues. If your skin is allergic to rubber, using a mask having rubber may lead to dermatitis. Similarly, glue or metal near the nose in the mask can lead to allergic reactions. And, if you have oily skin, chances of developing pimples is high and those with sensitive skin may develop skin rashes," says Dr BL Jangid, dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon, SkinQure Clinic.

What can we do to prevent it?

While stepping out without wearing mask is not an option, you can make the situation easier by making some informed choices when it comes to your mask. Dr Jangid suggests the following tips:

Choose a good fabric for your mask. Avoid synthetic fabric and pick something which is soft and natural like cotton.

Maintain good hygiene. Before wearing and after removing the mask, wash your face with a foam-based cleanser that can remove oil more effectively.

Give the makeup routine rest for a while and let your skin breathe while wearing a mask. As wearing masks above makeup can result in occlusion of oil pores and glands, potentially making breakouts worse.

Treat your acne. If your skin is prone to breakouts, opt for Clindamycin Gel. It is a skin-friendly and anti-bacterial gel that prevents pimples. You can also use a good lotion based moisturizer. And in case the problem persists, visit a certified dermatologist.
