Cica, the soothing K-beauty ingredient that will clear your skin

Over the past few years, Korean skincare has taken the beauty world by storm, with their dewy sunscreens, snail mucin creams, and cleansing balms infiltrating our beauty shelves and skincare routines. One such ingredient that the Koreans swear by in their skincare products for its intensely calming properties is cica, or Centella. It can be found in everything from moisturisers to serums, and even sheet masks. But what is it, and why does the skincare community love it so much? We find out.

What is cica?

Cica is short for its scientific name Centella Asiatica, with most skincare products labelling it as cica or simply Centella. The leafy green herb has been used for centuries in Asian skincare for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties and is also used to treat wounds. It is also known as gotu kola, Indian Pennywort, and tiger grass.

How will it help my skin?

Cica is popular for a reason—it has myriad benefits, no matter what skin type or concern you may have. The ingredient is believed to soothe and repair irritated skin and help in treating acne and calming sensitive skin. But that’s not all—there’s so much more the hero ingredient can do that goes beyond its calming properties.

It will help heal breakouts and wounds

To fully understand cica’s benefits for your skin, it’s important to know its chemical composition—it’s choc-a-bloc with amino acids; beta-carotene; fatty acids; and phytochemicals including vitamins C, A, B1, and B2. All together, these antioxidants can help stimulate collagen production and give your skin a boost of anti-inflammatory benefits. So, if your goal is to have firm, supple, and soothed skin, or want to treat breakouts and redness, then cica is your best bet.

It will hydrate and brighten skin

Cica also helps in hydrating the top layer of your skin, so it appears healthier and less inflamed. Plus, if you struggle with dullness, it will help brighten your skin, too.

It will help fight against wrinkles and age spots

Since it’s packed with antioxidants, cica helps in improving the appearance of wrinkles and age spots, and can even fight premature ageing due to factors like pollution. We love a multi-tasking ingredient!

When should I use a cica product?

One of the most common cica products you’ll find in the market is cica creams, which are used either as a spot treatment for stressed skin or all over as a soothing moisturiser. Cica-enriched products are especially helpful post-skin treatments, such as after a chemical peel, between retinol applications when your skin can be feeling a little raw, or post-shaving. Even if your skin isn’t particularly stressed out, adding cica to your skincare routine will definitely benefit you!
