Beach culture keeps selling us a fantasy. Think windswept hair that somehow stays perfect, skin that looks sun-kissed, and that effortless ‘just emerged from the ocean’ glow (because real beach days never involve sand in strange places or sunscreen melting off by noon, right?). Enter: Reality check. A full day by the sea usually means a layer of salt, sunscreen, and sand quietly settling onto your skin.
Your knee-jerk reaction is predictable. Out comes the scrub. Surely a quick exfoliating session will bring the glow back. But, is that actually the smartest move on a beach vacation, or could it end up doing more harm than good? Dermatologist Dr Shailya Gupta and Rohit Murgai, category head of beauty at VLCC Group, share that the answer lies somewhere in the middle. In other words, it’s more complicated than it seems.
Scrub or skip?
Thinking of slapping on your fave scrub every day at the beach? Dr Gupta says...maybe don’t. Between the sun, saltwater, and wind, your skin barrier is already clocking overtime. Adding exfoliation on top? That’s a one-way ticket to redness, dryness, and irritation. When it comes to beach skin, sometimes the real glow comes from simply letting your skin breathe.
Exfoliate before your trip, thank yourself later
It’s tempting to toss your go-to scrub into your beach bag right next to the SPF and that spicy thriller you've been dying to read. But beach skin has its own rhythm. Gentle exfoliation a few days before you leave usually works far better, lifting away dead skin and smoothing texture before the sun, salt, and sand enter the picture. But once you’re actually on the shore, the plan changes. “Your skin barrier is already dealing with UV rays, salty air, and layers of sunscreen that refuse to budge. Adding a scrub to the mix rarely does your skin any favours,” says Dr Gupta.
Beach glow tips and tricks
If your skin feels tight after a long day under the sun, resist the urge to reach for a scrub and lean into hydration instead. Beach days can leave the skin a little parched, so keeping your routine simple usually works best. Murgai suggests, “A gentle cleanser, a lightweight moisturiser, and a good sunscreen can easily carry your skin through the heat and humidity.” Look for ‘barrier-boosters’ like ceramides, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid to keep moisture levels steady, and lean on niacinamide, aloe vera, or centella asiatica to soothe the sizzle after a day in the dunes.
Press pause on strong actives
A beach vacation is not the time to road-test a high-intensity line-up of actives. According to Dr Gupta, heavy hitters like retinoids and AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) can make your skin way more vulnerable when the tropical sun joins the chat. “These ingredients increase skin sensitivity, particularly to sunlight,” she explains, adding: “When combined with intense UV exposure at the beach, they can raise the risk of irritation, redness, and even sunburn.”
Your beach day AM routine
According to Murgai, the basics are your best bet. Start with a mild cleanser to sweep away overnight oil sans stripping the skin’s natural defences. Follow with a lightweight moisturiser that hydrates without feeling heavy once the heat kicks in. The real non-negotiable is your sunscreen: Apply a generous, broad-spectrum layer before heading out—think a shot-glass-sized amount for your body, with zero skimping.
Your post-beach PM reset
After a day of salt, sun, and stubborn SPF, your skin needs a recovery session. Murgai suggests a gentle evening cleanse to wash away the day’s “souvenirs”—the sand and grit that can compromise your glow. Once clean, flood your skin with hydration. A serum or moisturiser packed with hyaluronic acid or ceramides will replenish moisture and support a tired barrier. Think of it as a quiet reset; a beach holiday is meant to be slow, and your skincare
