What’s inside the beauty bags of a makeup artist, dancer, stylist, and athlete?

Call it beauty surveillance: here’s what four pros carry everywhere.

What’s inside the beauty bags of a makeup artist, dancer, stylist, and athlete?

What does a makeup artist carry backstage? What survives a dancer’s rehearsal? What gets a stylist through fashion week? And what can actually keep up with an athlete? Cosmopolitan India decided to take a peek inside the beauty bags of makeup and hair artist and industry mentor Elton J Fernandez, dancer Megha J of The Vixens Crew, fashion stylist and entrepreneur Sheefa Gilani, and athlete Niharika Vashisht to spill the contents of the bags they take everywhere. Because when your day involves runway floors, rehearsals, fittings, shoots, or training sessions, beauty products have to be more than all talk and no stamina.

From the makeup artist’s backstage essentials and a dancer’s performance staples to a stylist’s low-key favourites and an athlete’s training-day must-haves, consider this a little beauty-bag snooping, with permission.

Cosmopolitan India: What are the five beauty staples we’d find if we went snooping through your bag right now?

Elton J Fernandez: A deep cheek-and-lip stain, a medium-to-full coverage concealer, a really good lash curler, mascara, and a little travel vial of powder. Those five can take me remarkably far. A stain brings blood and life back into the face; concealer lets me work selectively rather than covering everything; curled lashes immediately awaken the eye; mascara gives definition; and a tiny amount of powder lets me control shine precisely where I want to without taking the life out of skin.

Megha J: Concealer, blush, mascara, kajal and lip gloss. These five have earned a permanent spot because they make it so easy for me to put together a quick, effortless look. I use them so often that they’ve become complete staples for me. They’re also super easy to use; sometimes I don’t even need a mirror.

Sheefa Gilani: A good lip balm, lip liner, cream blush, brow gel, and sunscreen. I gravitate towards products that enhance rather than transform. I want skin to look like skin.

Niharika Vashisht: Kay Beauty Kajal Stick, Rare Beauty Liquid Blush in Grateful, Elf Cosmetics Plumping Lip Gloss in Praline, Elf Clear Brow and Mascara Stick, and Novology Tinted Sunscreen.

CI: If you could only keep one beauty product for a long day of rehearsals, performances, fittings, or training, what would it be?

EJF: Honestly, all of the above, and then some Q-tips. I use them constantly for finer detail: cleaning an edge, softening something that’s become too definite, or removing excess product. Sometimes the smallest tools give you the greatest control.

MJ: Definitely blush. Even after a long rehearsal, or when I’m short on time before a performance or event, a little blush instantly brings colour and life back to my face. Whether I’m wearing makeup or going bare-faced, the right shade can make such a difference.

SG: Lip balm. It sounds simple, but I’m constantly on the move, often surviving on Diet Coke, air-conditioning and very little downtime. A good lip balm makes me feel put together no matter how hectic the day gets.

NV: I never go out without sunscreen. Dot & Key’s Strawberry Dew and Novology’s tinted sunscreens are my current obsessions.

CI: Has your job changed your beauty game? Tell us about a product or beauty ritual you swear by now.

EJF: A superb lash curler, handled and utilised correctly. It is such a simple instrument, but it can completely elevate one’s game. There’s something about properly curled lashes that adds this twinkling keenness to human eyes without announcing that makeup has been done.

MJ: For me, it’s mascara. I’m always surprised by how well a good mascara holds up through long days, rehearsals, and all the movement that comes with performing. When you’re constantly on the go and sweating, you’d expect it to smudge or lose its shape, but a good formula can really stay put.

SG: Working in fashion has made me appreciate restraint. When you’re surrounded by beautiful clothes, jewellery, and styling details all day, you realise beauty doesn’t need to compete. I’ve become much more focused on healthy skin, grooming and products that create a natural, effortless finish rather than heavy makeup.

NV: I feel like no matter how long or intensely I train, my mascara stays intact. Currently using Maybelline New York’s The Falsies Lash Lift.

CI: What’s your tried-and-tested beauty trick for keeping everything looking fresh?

EJF: Learn to trust what makes your spirit sing, whether those are tricks that trend, tricks that don’t, or things somewhere in between. Learn technique, absolutely. Understand why things work. But eventually you have to develop an instinct for what feels true to you. Trends come and go; that instinct is what gives beauty personality.

MJ: My go-to hack is to keep things light and layer my makeup rather than applying too much at once. I always make sure my skin is well prepped, use thin layers and set the areas that tend to get oily. During a performance, instead of adding more powder, I prefer to gently blot away sweat and oil first and then touch up only where needed.

SG: Hydration changes everything. Every makeup artist I’ve admired has stressed the importance of well-prepped skin. A hydrated face instantly makes makeup sit better, look fresher and last longer. It’s not a glamorous secret, but it’s the one that works every single time.

NV: I always like to keep it light on the face. Maybe throw in some blush and lip gloss, but I do make sure my hair is neat and tidy, so I always keep a flyaway stick handy. I’m currently using one from Moxie Beauty.

CI: What’s one underrated beauty product or cult favourite you think deserves a little more time in the spotlight?

EJF: TIRTIR’s makeup fixer spray has become a favourite for setting makeup and prolonging its wear. But an actual backstage trick? Hairspray on the soles of shoes. A light mist can give them a little extra grip and help avoid slippage on a runway floor.

MJ: I think cream blushes deserve way more attention. They’re so versatile and can instantly bring life back to the face without making your makeup look heavy. You can use them on the cheeks, a little on the lips, and even build them up depending on the look you want.

SG: The SK-II Facial Treatment Essence. It’s one of those products that beauty editors, makeup artists, and celebrities have spoken about for years, and for good reason. It consistently makes my skin look brighter, healthier and more balanced, especially during busy periods of travel, shoots and long working days.

NV: I think not many athletes are aware of tinted sunscreens. I feel like it’s a revolutionary product, especially for athletes, as it gives you that perfect no-makeup makeup look during long training sessions.

If there’s one thing these beauty bags make clear, it’s that experience edits out the excess. The products that stay aren’t necessarily the newest or most hyped, but the ones that earn their place through sheer reliability. A good beauty kit, after all, is less about having more and more about knowing exactly what you need when the day refuses to go to plan.
