You'll notice something a little different about this latest installment of the "100 Years of Beauty" series from Cut Video. Episode 10 demonstrates popular German hair and makeup trends from the last century. Starting in 1950,  when the country was split into East and West Germany after World War II, the video splits into two frames, showing how the political divide impacted trends in the two nations.  By the 1990s (when the Berlin Wall came down), the video returns to one united frame again.

Director Mike Gaston spoke with the Huffington Post about the unique challenges of making an episode of the series for a country like Germany. "How do we negotiate the complications and horrors in their histories in a way that is honest but still accessible?" Gaston said, referencing the challenge of depicting an era such as the 1940s, when the country was under Nazi rule. "How do we acknowledge something like Nazi Germany without being reductive? Although I'm satisfied overall by our latest video, I'm not sure we were as successful confronting that period as we could've been."

The Cut has now featured 10 countries in the "100 Years of Beauty" series, including the Philippines and Mexico.
