The 'clean girl' look isn’t going anywhere, here are 7 essentials to help you nail it

It’s been a year since the ‘clean girl' look started taking over our social media feeds, and the trend seems here to stay. Hailey Bieber, Olivia Rodrigo, and Bella Hadid serve up daily doses of inspiration featuring fresh skin, flushed cheeks, and glossy lips. That lit-from-within, incandescent glow is just as alluring today as it was in the summer of 2022.

Comprising a barely-there base, lightly glossed yet deeply hydrated lips, and a glassy skin finish, the aesthetic has us all in a perpetual chokehold. Perhaps the post-pandemic world has gotten used to the comfort of less-is-more make-up. The surge in skincare certainly contributes here, healthier skin just glows differently! The hydrated, healthy skin look eclipses the matte-make-up look that was all the rage in 2016 (a time when we were all baking our under-eyes and swatching matte lip kits). People also seem to be leaning into natural textures that were previously considered “flaws”—just look at how overgrown eyebrows were harnessed into a soap brow obsession, and once-concealed freckles are now a coveted look. These little details that are just within notice are what this look is all about.

With the current roster of it-girls sporting the aesthetic on the regular, it’s undeniably proved to be a look that transitions seamlessly from day to night—perfect for a day of running errands or date night! Along with a dewy face, slicked-back hair, nude manicures, and minimalist gold jewellery complement this au naturale look. As skincare-make-up hybrids continue to flood the market, it’s now easier than ever to cop the “effortless” aesthetic; there’s an abundance of products infused with natural, skin-loving ingredients offering sun protection, hydration, and anti-oxidation benefits.

Though the initial idea leaned heavily towards laid-back minimalism, people are choosing to put their own spin on it—even occasionally dressing it up with a bold lip or colourful eyeshadow. The look provides a sheer canvas, making it fun to experiment with.
