7 Things You Never Knew About The Devil Wears Prada

It's been 10 years since Meryl Streep slayed the entire universe with her portrayal of Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, and it's safe to say the film remains just as iconic as ever. To this day, everyone involved with the movie knows and acknowledges that it was something special — and to celebrate its decade of existence, the stars  spill some of the film's juiciest secrets and share a few fun facts.

1. Meryl originally turned down the project because of how little they offered her

"The offer was to my mind slightly, if not insulting, not perhaps reflective of my actual value to the project," she told Variety. "There was my 'goodbye moment,' and then they doubled the offer. I was 55, and I had just learned, at a very late date, how to deal on my own behalf."

2. Rachel McAdams was the studio's first choice for Andy, but she turned it down

While Anne Hathaway made it very clear she wanted the role, Fox wanted to get a bigger movie star to play Andy. At the time, Rachel was co-starring in The Family Stone, and ended up turning the project down multiple times because she wanted to do more independent films.

3. Stanley Tucci met his real-life wife at Emily Blunt's wedding

How's this for life-changing: Stanley, who played Nigel in the film, is married to Emily's sister, Felicity, and the only reason the pair met is because of The Devil Wears Prada.

"Ten years after The Devil Wears Prada, Stanley is in my actual family," Blunt said. "How frightening is that? He's married to my sister. All thanks to The Devil Wears Prada."

4. The only reason Emily read for the film was because she was in town auditioning for a different project

Emily was actually only in town because she was auditioning for the lead female role in Eragon. Her agent insisted that she give Prada a go, and even though she was late for her flight home, she read for it anyways. A few days later, they asked her to come back and read for the role again — this time in something a little more fashionable than jeans and flip-flops. When she didn't get the role in Eragon, the studio immediately snatched her up.

5. Meryl changed one of the movie's most iconic lines

The writing for The Devil Wears Prada is, obviously, very tight to begin with. But during their table read, Meryl made one very small change to Miranda's last line. Instead of "Everybody wants to be me," she said, "Everybody wants to be us."

6. The character Emily wasn't originally supposed to be British

She was actually supposed to be American, but when Emily read for the role, she decided to go with a "stern British accent." The director loved it.

7. There was no second choice for the role of Miranda

That's right: There was only one woman in mind for Mirana Priestly, and that woman was Meryl Streep. The studio didn't even come up with a backup option.
